CSA Awards 2026: Markram and Wolvaardt dominate as Simon Harmer gets Test Player of the Year

Aiden Markram claimed the SA Men’s Player of the Year and SA Men’s Players’ Player of the Year honours at the recent Cricket South Africa Awards 2026. Laura Wolvaardt, the Proteas women’s team’s skipper, was bestowed with the Women’s Player of the Year, SA Women’s Players’ Player of the Year and Women’s ODI Player of the Year awards.

Simon Harmer’s standout performances in South Africa’s Test campaigns earned him the Test Player of the Year honour at the event, held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Thursday, July 16. The off-spinner took 30 wickets in just four matches during the April 2025 to 2026 eligibility window, emerging as one of three dominant winners alongside fellow stars Markram and Wolvaardt.

Harmer earned eight wickets in Rawalpindi to help South Africa draw their series against Pakistan, then led the Proteas to a decisive series sweep against India with match figures of 8 for 51 in Kolkata and 9 for 101 in Guwahati. His performances underlined his transformation from county cricket into one of the world’s leading red-ball bowlers.

How did Markram and Wolvaardt dominate the men’s and women’s awards, respectively?

Markram claimed the SA Men’s Player of the Year and SA Men’s Players’ Player of the Year awards after guiding South Africa to success across formats, highlighted by their ICC World Test Championship triumph over Australia. The captain also led the Test and ODI teams in Temba Bavuma’s absence and was South Africa’s standout batter at the T20 World Cup, scoring 286 runs with three half-centuries.

Wolvaardt swept the women’s awards by winning Women’s Player of the Year, SA Women’s Players’ Player of the Year and Women’s ODI Player of the Year and was instrumental in South Africa’s run to the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup final, where she ended up as the tournament’s leading run-getter, scoring a whopping 571 runs at an astonishing average of 71.37. This included magnificent centuries in both the semi-final (against England) and the final (against India, although in a losing cause). She also averaged 52.07 in the shortest format of the game across the review period, with 729 runs at a strike rate of 145.80.

What accounts for the dominance of Harmer in Test cricket?

Across South Africa’s tour of India, Harmer’s control and accuracy proved instrumental as the side secured their first Test victory on Indian soil since 2010, with his individual efforts reaching a Player of the Match display in the opening Test before taking six wickets in the second Test during the series-clinching win. This breakthrough marked the start of a new era in South African Test cricket under coach Shukri Conrad’s leadership.

Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi earned the Men’s T20 International Player of the Year and SA Fans’ Player of the Year honours, with his delivery to dismiss England captain Jos Buttler in the second ODI voted the Best Men’s Delivery of the Year. Quinton de Kock, the SA20 tournament’s highest run-scorer, was named SA20 Batter of the Season and SA20 Player of the Season. The honours recognised excellence across all formats throughout what proved to be a historic season for the nation.
