On May 10, 2024, Cricket South Africa announced the departure of Hilton Moreeng as the head coach of South Africa Women, as his contract comes to an end at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.

Moreeng’s tenure witnessed groundbreaking strides by Proteas Women in both white-ball disciplines. Proteas Women were able to notch 84 out of 149 ODIs by being on the winning side, equating to a win ratio of 56.38%. In T20Is, the team secured 60 wins in 127 encounters. As far as the purest format of the game is concerned, the side dew one and copped two losses.

With respect to global ICC events, South Africa Women’s best stagings were in the 2014 and 2020 editions of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, where they got as far as the semi-finals but couldn’t get past the barricade, bowing out to England Women and Australia Women by nine wickets and five runs, respectively. The 50-over World Cup saw a similar scenario, with South African women reaching the semi-finals in 2017 and 2022, only to be defeated by England Women on both occasions. An exceptional campaign at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 saw Proteas Women getting past the semi-final stage for the very first time, to end runners-up.

In a statement directed to fellow South African compatriots and the cricketing fraternity in general, Moreeng extended his profound appreciation to the CSA and the management for granting him the wonderful privilege of coaching the South African women’s national team, with him being grateful for the fact of leading such an adroit cluster of athletic personalities throughout the passage of time.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the CSA and the management for entrusting me with the incredible opportunity to coach the Proteas Women’s national team. It has been an honour and a privilege to lead such a talented group of athletes over the years,” expressed Moreeng.
