Devon Conway will miss the first ODI against India at Eden Park on November 4 after sustaining a concussion during a fielding drill on Tuesday. The incident occurred when Conway and Matt Henry came together as Henry moved to take a catch, with both players requiring immediate medical attention on the ground.
Conway was subsequently taken to hospital, where scans confirmed the concussion diagnosis and ended his involvement in the Auckland opener. Henry’s situation is more straightforward: he cleared his concussion tests and remains in contention for selection, though New Zealand Cricket confirmed his condition would continue to be monitored.
“Both players will continue to be monitored and their involvement in the ODI series against India will be updated in due course,” an NZC statement read, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Who is likely to replace Conway in the playing XI?
Tim Seifert is the most likely candidate to step into the first ODI in Conway’s absence. Seifert had already been named in the squad for the opening two matches when the squad was announced on November 2, and his presence now carries greater weight given the circumstances.
Captain Mitchell Santner confirmed Henry had passed his concussion assessments and indicated that Seifert would serve as the direct replacement for Conway in the batting order.
“Yeah, I guess he’s [Seifert] the back-up batter in our squad. So it’ll probably be a direct swap if Dev’s [Conway] unavailable, which is a shame. He is obviously very good in one-day cricket and, you know, was biding his time in the T20 series. And, yeah, I guess another one of those freak accidents that happens,” Santner said on Cricinfo.
How is New Zealand’s injury record ahead of the ODI series?
The collision compounds a difficult injury period for New Zealand ahead of the series. Mark Chapman has been sidelined for the entire ODI campaign with a hamstring complaint, and Rachin Ravindra is also unavailable after suffering a shoulder injury. Henry himself had only recently rejoined the squad, having sat out the final three T20Is against India while recovering from a partial tear in his right quadriceps.
Conway’s availability for the matches beyond the opener remains subject to further medical assessment, and New Zealand Cricket has not yet confirmed whether he will return later in the series.
