Cloud County Ground honours Essex Legends Gooch, Cook by renaming stands

Graham Gooch and Alastair Cook are probably the first two names which pop into every cricket aficionado’s head while turning their attention to England as a cricketing giant. Both of them, separated by a 31-year gap, stand as pillars of England’s cricketing legacy, their contributions leaving an indelible mark on the sport while appealing as stalwarts of the game to two different generations. Both of them, despite being an entire cohort apart, had a few similarities, with both of them being prolific openers and charismatic captains back in the day. 

The side closest to East London, previously known as the Hayes Close End, will now bear the name of Graham Gooch End, while the River End will be renamed the Sir Alastair Cook End.

The Chief Executive Officer at Essex Cricket, John Stephenson, said that it was truly an honour to rename the two stands at the Cloud County Ground after the two legends of Essex Cricket, also stating that as a part of a club with such a revered history, it was but right they paid heed to two of the finest cricketers of all-time by renaming the stands at the ground, and that for all they’ve done for keeping the name of the club amongst the clouds, he couldn’t recollect two cricketers who deserved it as much as Graham Gooch and Alastair Cook.

“It’s a real honour to rename the bowling ends at The Cloud County Ground after two legends of Essex cricket. “We’re a club with a long history, and it’s important that we recognise that. The renaming of our ground ends allows us to pay tribute to two of our finest players of all time,” John Stephenson was quoted as saying by the BCC. 

Gooch went on to represent Essex in 391 first-class matches, spanning 24 incredible years from 1973 to 1997, amassing 30,701 runs at a commendable average of 51.77. He represented England in 118 Tests and 125 ODIs, with a top score of 333 and 142, respectively. For two decades, he held the title of England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer with 8,900 runs until he was surpassed in 2015 by Alastair Cook, the other player being honored in this latest update to The Cloud County Ground. 

Cook maintains the record for the most Test runs scored in an England shirt to date, accumulating 12,472 runs, and he represented Essex from 2003 until his retirement last October. Cook featured in 158 first-class matches for the county, accumulating 11,337 runs at an average of 45.16, registering 31 centuries. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2023 season.

Throughout their time in Essex and England, Gooch acted as a mentor to Cook, fostering a close bond between the two mainstays for both county and country.
