Bjorn Fortuin named South Africa captain for Namibia white-ball tour

Bjorn Fortuin has been appointed captain of the South Africa squad for the white-ball tour of Namibia, which covers a T20I tri-series and a three-match ODI series in Windhoek. The Proteas Men’s X account confirmed the squad and the captaincy on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

The T20I tri-series, which also features Zimbabwe, runs from August 28 to September 6, 2026, at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. The three-match ODI series between South Africa and Namibia follows immediately, from September 9 to 13, 2026, at the same venue. The ODI series is the first bilateral 50-over series between the two nations.

“We’ve selected one squad for both series as we feel we have all departments well covered and it provides a great opportunity for players to build on their international caps.” Connor Esterhuizen said, as quoted by ICC.

Why was Fortuin chosen to lead the South Africa squad?

Fortuin made his international debut in September 2019 and has previously captained the Lions domestic team. His appointment as national captain for this tour reflects his standing as a senior figure within the group.

The selectors were direct about their confidence in him. Team management stated:

“Bjorn is an experienced player and proven leader who has successfully captained the Lions, and we have every confidence in his ability to lead this group.”

Which players received notable call-ups for the Namibia tour?

The tour has opened the door for several players on the fringes of the national setup. Duan Jansen, a 26-year-old all-rounder who shares a twin bond with Proteas pace bowler Marco Jansen, secured his first national call-up on the back of consistent performances for the Titans on the domestic circuit.

Eathan Bosch is included as an uncapped T20I player, while Connor Esterhuizen, Jordan Hermann and Nqobani Mokoena have each received maiden ODI call-ups. Rubin Hermann, brother of Jordan, is also part of the same squad.

The selectors addressed the inclusion of Esterhuizen, Mokoena and Jordan Hermann directly:

“We saw glimpses of what Connor and Nqobani can offer during the T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year. It was unfortunate that Jordan picked up an injury in the opening match of that series, so we’re looking forward to seeing him get another opportunity at this level.”

On Jansen’s selection, the selectors added:

“This tour has also opened the door for players who have performed domestically. Duan is one of those players. He is a quality all-rounder who has also shown great character for the Titans.”
