Ben Stokes set to return to competitive cricket over a week after international retirement

Ben Stokes retired from international cricket on 29 June 2026, but the 35-year-old has made clear his intention to continue playing club cricket. He announced his shock decision on the penultimate day of England’s Test series decider against New Zealand, bringing his 15-year England career and four-year tenure as Test captain to a close at the end of the third Test at Trent Bridge.

The all-rounder retired after enduring a demanding stretch with England. He found the “extra responsibilities” of playing for and captaining England too “mentally tiring” to continue. He admitted he had held doubts over the past “six to 12 months” over whether to continue playing international cricket but did indicate he would carry on playing for his county side, Durham, and explore potential white-ball franchise opportunities.

“Being back at Durham, when I wasn’t playing in the second Test, I found a new lease of life for the game, but unfortunately I just couldn’t get that feeling back. I’m very excited about the next part of what I get to do. Going back to playing for my boyhood club Durham, I’m comparing this week to that week – right now I am buzzing,” Stokes was quoted as saying by BBC.

He expressed relief at the prospect of shedding the mental burden of international duties. Stokes texted Durham head coach Ryan Campbell on Sunday night, saying “Up the Ds.”

“But there have been moments this week that have been really tough and it just adds to everything and it makes it clear that I’ve made the right decision,” Stokes added.

Will Ben Stokes feature in the One-Day Cup this summer?

Durham head coach Campbell said he was hopeful that Stokes would play a part in this summer’s One-Day Cup. The One-Day Cup run gets underway on July 21, with Durham taking on Derbyshire as part of the first round of fixtures. Stokes does not have a contract to play in The Hundred, having opted not to enter this season’s auction. With The Hundred starting on the same day, any players signed up for that competition will be unavailable to feature in the One-Day Cup for their counties unless their franchises release them to play.

What shape are Stokes’ plans for IPL?

Stokes did not register for the 2025 mega-auction, so he is not expected to become available until the 2028 season, unless the regulations change. He appears likely to play somewhere in the world this winter, as South Africa’s SA20 is an obvious destination after a hamstring injury forced him to pull out of a lucrative deal with MI Cape Town in the 2024-25 edition of the tournament.

Unlike previous England captains Nasser Hussain and Andrew Strauss, he intends to play on after the end of his international career. The prospect of Stokes taking back his retirement call and returning for the 2027 Ashes remains the subject of speculation, though he has firmly dismissed any such possibility for now.
