Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan has made headlines after a video of him slapping a fan went viral on social media. His act triggered controversy before he won the Parliament elections.
According to reports, the incident occurred weeks before at a polling station where the cricketer had come to cast his vote and was surrounded by fans. Shakib wins general election with a huge margin
Shakib Al Hasan registered a significant victory in the country’s general election on Sunday, January 7 despite the main opposition party, BNP (Bangladesh National Party) boycotting the vote. The 36-year-old won the election with a lead of 150,000 votes in his constituency in the western town of Magura. Abu Naser, the district’s chief administrator, cited his triumph as “a landslide victory.” Meanwhile, the cricketer is yet to comment on his remarkable victory in the elections.
Nevertheless, Shakib’s victory was expected as he entered the election as a candidate from the ruling Awami League party, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Moreover, there are speculations that Sheikh Hasina will secure a fifth term in power after the cricketer’s success.
Shakib, who was the only cricketer who has been ranked the No. 1 all-rounder across all formats simultaneously by the International Cricket Council (ICC), has earlier clarified that he is far from calling time on his cricket career. The 36-year-old has been out of action since Bangaldesh’s ODI World Cup game against Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi after he fractured his finger. The star all-rounder is likely to play in the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) but there is less chance of him participating in the much-awaited ICC T20 World Cup.
