A left hamstring injury has ended Ottneil Baartman‘s involvement in South Africa’s three-match ODI series against Australia, with Cricket South Africa confirming Duan Jansen as his replacement in the squad on September 13, 2026.

Baartman picked up the injury while representing the Dolphins in the opening match of the domestic first-class series against the Titans. He managed just five overs with the ball and was unable to bat in the second innings. CSA confirmed he will undergo further medical assessment before a rehabilitation plan is put in place, and no recovery timeline has been given.

South Africa’s pace resources have taken a double hit, with Kagiso Rabada also ruled out of the ODI leg of the tour due to a hamstring concern of his own. CSA has stated that a decision on Rabada’s availability for the Test series will be made closer to the October 9 start date. The three ODIs are scheduled for September 24, 27 and 30, with a three-Test series to follow.

How did Baartman sustain the injury and what is the medical outlook?

The injury occurred during the Dolphins’ first-class fixture against the Titans, the opening game of the domestic first-class season. Baartman bowled five overs before the hamstring problem forced him out of the match entirely, and he did not take his place at the crease in the second innings. The extent of the damage became clear enough during the game to prevent any further participation.

CSA has not provided a specific recovery window. Baartman will be assessed by medical staff before a rehabilitation programme is confirmed. Whether he remains in consideration for the subsequent Test series, which begins on October 9, has not been confirmed by CSA at this stage.

Why has Duan Jansen been selected as the replacement?

Jansen’s call-up brings left-arm pace variety to a South African attack that was already set to include his brother Marco Jansen. Marco was in strong form in the very same first-class match in which Baartman was injured, taking seven wickets across the game and underlining the Jansen family’s growing prominence in the current South African pace setup.

Duan Jansen joins the squad with limited time to prepare before the first ODI on September 24. His recent form in the Namibia series was noted by the selectors as a factor in his selection, though his exact figures from that campaign

South Africa squad for Australia ODI series
