Persistent rain forced the abandonment of the third and final T20I between Australia and New Zealand at North Sydney Oval on October 22, 2026, confirming Australia as 2-0 series winners and handing them the Rose Bowl trophy. Play had already been delayed by more than an hour before the match was reduced to 14 overs per side. New Zealand managed only 2.4 overs, reaching 14 for 2, before the umpires called the match off for good.

Australia had already made the series result academic by winning the first two matches. All three fixtures were staged at North Sydney Oval. Ashleigh Gardner was named Player of the Series in recognition of her performances across the two completed matches. The series represented the first time both sides had played T20 cricket since the T20 World Cup concluded.

What happened during the brief play before the abandonment?

Australia captain Sophie Molineux chose to bowl after the match was trimmed to 14 overs per side. New Zealand had reshuffled their batting order ahead of the fixture: Melie Kerr was promoted to open, Izzy Sharp moved to number three, and Flora Devonshire dropped to number six. The changes had little time to be tested.

Molineux struck in the very first over, dismissing Kerr after the batter had driven the opening delivery through the covers for a boundary. Kerr then skied the next ball to mid-on. The wicket was Molineux’s 20th of her career, taken in the first over of an innings. Kim Garth added a second wicket shortly after, varying her pace with a succession of slower balls before producing a rapid delivery that accounted for Georgia Plimmer. New Zealand were 14 for 2 when the umpires abandoned the contest.

How did Australia build their 2-0 lead?

Australia edged a tight opening T20I on October 18, 2026, winning by two wickets. They were far more dominant in the second match on October 20, 2026, posting 167 for 7 and then restricting New Zealand to 127 for 8 to win by 40 runs. The back-to-back victories meant Australia arrived at the third fixture with an unassailable advantage, and the rain on October 22 simply made the outcome official.

The two sides are scheduled to meet again in an ODI series in March, giving New Zealand an opportunity to respond to their T20I series defeat.
