After a swashbuckling display with the bat during the T20Is against Australia, young batter Dewald Brevis looks all set to make a mark in the One-Day Internationals (ODIs) as well. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has dropped a major hint at Brevis’ debut in the format ahead of the first ODI, which is set to get underway on Tuesday, August 19 at the Cazaly’s Stadium, Cairns.
Bavuma has expressed that it always excites him when he sees young faces performing at the international stage. He counts the scintillating display with the bat by Brevis in the T20Is of the ongoing tour as one of the key moments in the youngster’s career. He further said that he will look up to what Brevis can offer for the Proteas in the 50-over cricket, as the format is completely different, and requires a change in temperament.
“It’s always exciting when you see the young faces. Obviously, the big talk has been on Brevis. (He has been) putting up his hand and showing what he is capable of. I am excited to see what he can also bring within the one-day stuff,” Bavuma said at the pre-match press conference on Monday.
Dewald Brevis is like a breath of fresh air: Shukri Conrad
Meanwhile, the Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad also seemed to be in awe of the way Brevis batted in the T20Is, where he smashed a record-shattering century against the might of a strong Australian line-up. However, his individual performances were not enough, as Australia clinched the series 2-1. Despite losing the series, Conrad feels that they have earned Brevis, who according to him, comes into the team as a breath of fresh air.
“I think sometimes we can be too humble. We don’t show off enough to the world what we’re capable of doing. Like Dewald Brevis does. He’s obviously going to grow older, but I hope he continues to play like a 22-year-old. Sometimes, with experience, guys tend to adjust the way they play. He’s a breath of fresh air,” Conrad had said after the third T20I.
Tuesday will be the first time Australia will cross swords with South Africa in an ODI since their abandoned game in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The weather is expected to be clear in Cairns throughout the day, as per the weather forecast, allowing a full-fledged game of cricket. The series will hold prominence for both the sides, as the ODI World Cup in 2027 is nearing.
