Ashwin’s blueprint for MI in potential Hardik Pandya trade with KKR

R Ashwin has laid out a specific blueprint for Mumbai Indians in the event of a potential trade for Hardik Pandya from Kolkata Knight Riders. Former off-spinner stated that MI should agree to a deal with KKR only if they receive Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh in return.

Ashwin also assessed rival bids for Pandya, noting that Chennai Super Kings are expected to offer Shivam Dube and a pacer, while KKR’s offer is likely to involve Cameron Green. He added a word of caution about the Australian allrounder’s availability, given the possibility that Green could prioritise the Ashes. Cameron Green was traded from Mumbai Indians to Royal Challengers Bangalore in December 2023, making his potential inclusion in a KKR offer a notable development in itself.

“The talk is that CSK will give Dube and a pacer, while KKR will give away Cameron Green. What happens if Green decides to focus on the Ashes next year? If I were MI, I would accept a deal with KKR on only one condition: getting Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh in return. That is the only way MI gets stronger. Don’t count out Hardik going to a franchise other than CSK or KKR,” said Ashwin on his YouTube channel.

Why does Ashwin favour the KKR deal over CSK’s offer?

Ashwin’s preference for the KKR route is rooted in the quality and reliability of the players MI would receive. Cameron Green’s potential Ashes commitment introduces a scheduling uncertainty that Ashwin views as a significant risk, weakening KKR’s base offer of the Australian allrounder considerably.

By contrast, Ashwin argued that Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh represent a more dependable and impactful return for MI. Both players are Indian cricketers without the international scheduling uncertainty that surrounds Green, making them more reliable assets for a franchise building for the long term. Ashwin also framed the decision around the competitive threat each trade would create for MI.

How would a Hardik trade affect the balance of power among top IPL franchises?

Ashwin assessed the impact of a Pandya trade on the competitive landscape involving three of the IPL’s most successful franchises. He noted that CSK acquiring Pandya in exchange for Dube and a pacer would make them stronger, but not unbeatable, while KKR landing Pandya would represent a more significant shift in the pecking order.

KKR are already navigating a period of transition. The franchise released captain Shreyas Iyer and are dealing with a leadership situation following Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement, making the addition of a player of Pandya’s calibre potentially more transformative for them than for CSK.

“If CSK give away Dube and one Indian pacer to get Hardik, they get strong but not invincible. However, if KKR get Hardik, they suddenly look very strong. KKR will become a lethal batting lineup with Hardik. These are teams with five, five and three titles, so MI have to think about how they can ensure one of these teams doesn’t leapfrog them,” said Ashwin.
