Ashes 2023: Nathan Lyon’s ‘significant calf strain’ makes him a doubt for the remainder of series

Pat Cummins-led Australia are set to be without ace spinner Nathan Lyon for a considerable period after he was seen arriving at Lord’s with the help of crutches ahead of the third day. A latest update from the Australian camp has hinted at a lengthy spell on the sidelines for the veteran spinner.

Nathan Lyon, playing his 100th consecutive Test match at the iconic Lord’s, walked off the pitch after suffering an unfortunate calf injury. While his absence severely hampers Australia’s bowling attack in the ongoing second Test, the veteran offie’s participation for the remainder of the series is a huge doubt after a latest update from Cricket Australia’s media manager.

The senior Aussie spinner is required to undergo rehabilitation after suffering a calf strain on the second day of the Lord’s Test, casting doubt on his further participation in the five-match series. Lyon was one of the protagonists of Australia’s thrilling victory in the Ashes opener at Edgbaston.

“Nathan has been diagnosed with a significant calf strain. He will require a period of rehabilitation after this match is concluded. A decision regarding his availability for the remainder of the series will be made at the conclusion of the game,” an update from Cricbuzz read.

Todd Murphy in line to make his Ashes debut after Lyon’s injury concerns

Young Australian spinner Todd Murphy, who shone on his tour of India earlier this year, is in contention to make his Ashes debut in the absence of the injured offie. The visitors are relying on the part-time spin of Travis Head for the ongoing second Test.

Talking about the action in the middle, the visitors drew first blood on the third day after Mitchell Starc got rid of the English skipper on the second delivery of the day. Harry Brook was the next to depart as England’s reckless approach against the short-ball continued at the home of cricket.
