‘As a former prime minister’ – Moin Khan urges cricketers to speak up for Imran Khan’s medical care

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Moin Khan expressed grave concern over the deteriorating health of Imran Khan, the 1992 ODI World Cup-winning captain, and urged government and jail authorities to ensure the 73-year-old receives immediate and proper medical care.

Moin, who was a key member of the side that lifted the World Cup under Imran’s leadership, released an impassioned video message on Saturday calling upon the cricketing fraternity to rally behind the former prime minister.

Imran Khan has been lodged at Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail since August 2023 on corruption charges, which he continues to deny.

Moin Khan called on the authorities to ensure that Imran Khan, as a former prime minister and a former Pakistan cricket captain, receives the medical care he requires.

“My request is that our captain’s right, as a former prime minister, as a citizen of Pakistan, his right to medical care should be honoured. Whatever he needs, it should be seen to,” he said in a video uploaded by him.

Moin also urged other former and current cricketers to speak publicly in support of Imran, highlighting the impact he had on Pakistan cricket and the players who played under him.

“Besides, I also urge other cricketers to speak up and voice their support for him. Imran Khan’s contribution to Pakistan cricket [is immense] and all of us who played in his era learnt a lot from him. He has given Pakistan cricket a lot,” he said.

International captains join the call for Imran Khan’s welfare

The Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered authorities on August 18 to transfer Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. Former Pakistan cricketers Javed Miandad and Basit Ali also urged the government to ensure proper medical treatment for the jailed former captain.

International cricket captains have joined the calls for Imran Khan’s medical care. Australian captain Pat Cummins became the first active international cricket captain to publicly support the group of former international captains who had raised concerns about Imran’s health and treatment.

A group of 22 former international captains representing India, England, the West Indies and New Zealand wrote to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding Imran Khan’s situation, building on an earlier appeal by 14 former captains in February.
