Afghanistan playing its home series against India in Delhi shows the strong bond between the two countries: DDCA President Rohan Jaitley

India defeated Afghanistan by 7 wickets in the first T20I of a three-match bilateral series at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on September 13. Afghanistan posted 156 for 8 in their innings, and India chased down the target in 13.4 overs, losing only 3 wickets. Abhishek Sharma was named Player of the Match after scoring 82 runs off 32 balls.

The series is part of both teams’ preparations for the upcoming Asian Games. The three-match T20I series is scheduled for September 13, 15 and 17, all at Arun Jaitley Stadium. DDCA President Rohan Jaitley reflected on the opening match and the significance of hosting Afghanistan’s home series in Delhi. He also highlighted the strong turnout at the iconic venue, as the support for both teams was commendable.

“It was wonderful to see international cricket return to Delhi and, more importantly, to see so many fans come out to support both India and Afghanistan. A 28,000-plus crowd created a fantastic atmosphere at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, and it was particularly special for the home fans to see India begin the series with a win. With Afghanistan playing its home series against India in Delhi, the occasion was a great reflection of the strong bond between the two countries and the power of sport to bring people closer, in line with the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of stronger ties with our neighbours,” Jaitley said.

“We are also grateful for the support and encouragement from the BCCI and ICC Chairman Jay Shah, which helped make it possible for Delhi to host this bilateral series. With the BRICS Summit also concluding in Delhi, it was a special moment for the city to welcome people from across the world through both sport and diplomacy. We look forward to welcoming the teams and fans back for the remaining two T20Is and hope to see the same energy in the stands,” he added.

The remaining two matches of the series are scheduled for September 15 and 17 at the same venue. Both teams will look to build on their performances as they continue their preparations for the Asian Games.
