The Adelaide Strikers have announced the much-awaited acquisition of former England all-rounder Ben Stokes. The 35-year-old is set to feature across every stage of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season, a commitment that distinguishes this signing from the partial campaigns that most overseas players agree to.

Stokes retired from Test cricket in June, a decision that immediately opened the door to franchise T20 competitions around the world. Adelaide Strikers moved quickly once that window appeared, and the club secured his signature ahead of Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades, both of whom had been pursuing him.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Adelaide Strikers for BBL|16,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed playing in Australia, and when the opportunity came up to join the Strikers it was one I couldn’t pass up. I can’t wait to get started, create some special memories with the group and give Strikers fans plenty to cheer about,” Stokes said in an official statement from the team.

Why did Stokes choose Adelaide Strikers?

The timing of Stokes’ Test retirement in late June 2026 gave several BBL franchises the chance to approach him, and multiple clubs did exactly that. The Sixers and Renegades were both in contention, but the Adelaide Strikers ultimately prevailed and locked in the deal before the start of September. Head Coach Tim Paine outlined what the club expects Stokes to bring to the group.

“Ben is one of the greatest all-rounders the game has seen, a proven match-winner and a competitor who thrives under pressure. We’re thrilled to have a player of his ability join our squad and can’t wait to see him put on a show in BBL|16. Adelaide Oval is the best place in the world to play and watch cricket, so we’re looking forward to seeing our members and fans flock through the gates to watch him in action,” Paine said in the statement.

What does the signing mean for BBL|16?

Stokes’ commitment to the full season schedule gives Adelaide Strikers a marquee all-rounder from the opening round through to the finals. Overseas players are frequently signed for only a portion of the Big Bash League season, so his agreement to participate throughout the tournament represents a meaningful advantage for the Strikers.

Head Coach Tim Paine and the Strikers’ management can now plan their squad structure and batting order with Stokes as a confirmed presence at every fixture at Adelaide Oval and away. The signing raises the profile of the franchise considerably ahead of the 2026-27 campaign and is expected to drive strong interest from members and supporters, as Paine himself noted when welcoming the deal.
