The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, held from February 7 to March 8 across India and Sri Lanka, has delivered high-octane action, dramatic upsets, and several batting masterclasses. After a fierce group stage battle among 20 teams, eight advanced to the Super Eight. Eventually, England, South Africa, and New Zealand secured their semifinal spots with consistent performances.
While bowlers enjoyed assistance in Sri Lankan conditions, Indian venues largely favoured stroke-makers. In such scenarios, openers played a defining role in shaping their teams’ fortunes.
Here are the five openers who dominated the T20 World Cup 2026
Sahibzada Farhan

Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan emerged as the leading run-scorer of the tournament. The right-hander amassed 383 runs in six innings at a remarkable average of 76.60, showcasing consistency and composure. He began steadily with 47 against the Netherlands before producing a classy 73 against the USA. Although he suffered a setback with a duck in the high-pressure clash against India, Farhan responded emphatically.
He smashed an unbeaten 100 against Namibia, demonstrating his ability to bounce back under pressure. In a crucial encounter against England, he scored a composed 63, though it came in a losing cause. Farhan later registered his second century of the tournament against hosts Sri Lanka. Despite the victory, Pakistan missed out on a semifinal berth.
Brian Bennett

Young Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett was one of the surprise packages of the tournament. Zimbabwe entered as underdogs but stunned Australia and Sri Lanka in the group stage to reach the Super Eight. Bennett was central to that success. He scored an unbeaten 48 against Oman before delivering back-to-back match-winning knocks, 64* against Australia and 63* against Sri Lanka. His aggressive yet controlled approach at the top set the tone for Zimbabwe’s fearless brand of cricket.
Although he managed just five runs against West Indies in the Super Eight, he responded with a breathtaking unbeaten 97 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai against hosts India. Despite ending on the losing side, Bennett’s knock earned widespread admiration and established him as a rising star in international cricket.
Aiden Markram

South Africa’s captain Aiden Markram led from the front with impactful innings throughout the tournament. He began with 59 against Canada but struggled briefly against Afghanistan, scoring just five. However, in a high-stakes clash against New Zealand, Markram delivered a magnificent unbeaten 86, guiding his team into the Super Eight.
He followed up with a match-winning 82* against the West Indies, sealing South Africa’s semifinal qualification. Markram’s leadership, combined with his ability to anchor, proved invaluable in the tournament. His consistency at the top provided South Africa with strong starts, allowing their middle order to capitalise.
Tim Seifert

New Zealand opener Tim Seifert accumulated 216 runs in six innings, playing a key role in his side’s march to the semifinals. He started strongly with 65 against Afghanistan and followed it up with a commanding unbeaten 89 against the UAE. During that innings, he forged a century-plus opening stand with Finn Allen, laying a perfect foundation.
Though his form dipped slightly in the later stages, with a highest of 35 against England in the Super Eight, Seifert’s early contributions were crucial in ensuring New Zealand’s steady progress in the tournament.
Ishan Kishan

Indian opener Ishan Kishan delivered several impactful innings for the hosts. He started modestly with 20 against the USA but soon found his rhythm. Kishan scored 61 against Namibia and then played a crucial knock of 77 in the high-pressure clash against Pakistan. His aggressive intent provided India with momentum in key matches.
Although he registered 18 against the Netherlands and a duck versus South Africa, Kishan contributed a quick 38 against Zimbabwe despite not opening in that match. His fearless stroke-play made him a valuable asset for India throughout the tournament.
