ENG vs IND 2025, Fourth Test: Ben Stokes (Source: X)
Ben Stokes carved his name into the record books during the fourth Test of the ongoing five-match series between England and India, as he became only the fifth skipper in Test history to attain the distinguished double of scoring a ton and picking up a five-wicket haul in the same Test.
As far as England cricket is concerned, Stokes became only the fourth cricketer to attain the landmark after Ian Botham (5 times), Tony Greig (once), and Gus Atkinson (once). It was a memorable performance from the English red-ball skipper in Manchester with ball (5/72) and then bat (141 off 198).
Needless to say, scoring a ton and bagging a five-wicket haul in the same Test is a remarkable achievement, something which has been achieved only five times by captains.

Australia had amassed a massive 668 in the first innings of the game. Atkinson had toiled across more than two days to send down 48 overs for figures of 2/108. He came out to bat with West Indies having lost their fifth wicket for 143. Together with wicketkeeper-batter Clairmonte Depeiaza (122), he grinded it out to score his first double-ton.
He had never scored a century till that point. Atkinson returned with much better figures than in the first innings. Bowling 36.2 overs, he conceded only 56 runs while picking up a five-wicket haul to dismiss the opponents for 249.
The match ended in draw after West Indies ended on 234/6 at stumps on the final day. The pair of Atkinson and Depeiaza, who had put up the massive stand in their team’s first innings, remained unbeaten at the end in the second innings.
4. Garry Sobers vs England – 174 and 5/41 (Leeds, 1966)

Garry Sobers top-scored for his team in the first innings with a classical 260-ball 174, which comprised 24 boundaries in total. He combined with Seymour Nurse (137 off 323) to put on a 265-run stand for the fifth wicket to take West Indies to 500.
England’s bottom five (No. 7 to 11) were undone by Sobers, as he ended up being the most economical amongst his teammates with splendid figures of 5/41 in 19.3 overs. England ended up falling for 240 in 78.3 overs.
Sobers played a handy part to wrap up England’s second innings where they were following on. He picked up three crucial wickets (3/39 in 20.1 overs) and supported Lance Gibbs (6/39 in 19 overs) as West Indies won by an innings and 55 runs.
3. Mushtaq Mohammad vs West Indies – 121 and 5/28 (Port of Spain, 1977)

Mushtaq Mohammad forged a century stand with Majid Khan (92) until the latter got out with the team score on 159. Despite batters coming and going since then, Mohammad held up one end to stroke a wonderfully compiled 121.
He then wreaked havoc with his leg-breaks to shoot West Indies out for only 154 in 55.5 overs. Mohammad registered excellent figures of 5/28 in 10.5 overs. These figures eventually ended up as his best in an innings in his Test career.
Pakistan ended up winning the match comprehensively by 266 runs. The skipper scored a half-century (56) in Pakistan’s second innings before picking up a three-fer (3/69 in 21 overs) to bundle Pakistan out for 222 during the run-chase.
2. Imran Khan vs India – 6/98 and 117 (Faisalabad, 1983)

Imran Khan was one amongst the four centurions from Pakistan as they ended up on 652 in their first innings after cleaning up India for 372 in their first innings. Imran starred in the first innings with a six-fer in the 25 overs bowled.
Having claimed a commanding 280-run lead, the ball was in Pakistan’s court with the most part of two days in their hands. Imran carried forward the momentum to pick up another five-fer (5/82 in 30.5 overs) to help skittle India out for 286.
The eight-run target was chased in 2.1 overs, as Pakistan romped home comprehensively by 10 wickets. This was the first instance of four players scoring a century in an innings for Pakistan. It was also the first time a bowler had conceded 200 runs in an innings (7/220 in 38.4 overs) against Pakistan.
1. Ben Stokes vs India – 5/72 and 141 (Manchester, 2025)

Stokes’ first couple of wickets were that of opposition skipper Shubman Gill (12 off 23) and Sai Sudharsan (61 off 151). The England skipper was quite instrumental in restricting India to only 358. This was his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket after almost eight years.
He later played a sublime knock to pile on the pressure on Gill & Co. Stokes had to retire hurt on 66*, but then returned after the fall of three wickets to script a memorable ton. He went past the 7000-run mark as well in the process.
