With his classical yet attacking leg-spin, Amit Mishra proved to be a lethal threat to a lot of batters during his playing days. The 42-year-old leg-spinner brought his career to a close by announcing retirement on September 4, 2025.
Mishra played 68 internationals for India. In hindsight, he did not play as many matches as his talent warranted. However, he could easily be considered as an IPL legend as well as a seasoned veteran for Haryana in domestic cricket. While he set many a record during his time as a cricketer, there were some he did not manage to breach. On that note, here is a look at some records he was close to breaking but could not.
3 records which Amit Mishra couldn’t break in his career
3. Oldest Indian player to have featured in the IPL
![]()
Brad Hogg is the oldest cricketer to have featured in the IPL. The left-arm wrist-spinner played his final IPL match aged 45. While it might have been a bit unrealistic for Mishra, currently 42, to break Hogg’s long-standing record, it was not entirely impossible since he is still fit.
Further, had Mishra been in the midst of things for three more seasons, he could have surpassed Pravin Tambe’s record of featuring in the tournament at 44 years of age. Former Indian cricketing legend MS Dhoni played IPL 2025 at an age of 43.
2. Most matches played in the IPL
![]()
Mishra has played for four different franchises across his IPL career, namely Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) from 2008 to 2010, Deccan Chargers in 2011 and 2012, Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013 and 2014, Delhi Capitals 2015 to 2021, and Lucknow Super Giants in 2023 and 2024. He ended his IPL career with 162 matches to his name.
For a player playing from the inaugural season till 2024 (barring the missed season in 2022), it was expected from a frontline spinner to have played the most matches in the league. However, this was not meant to be for Mishra as he could not consolidate his position in the XI in his last four seasons, playing only 15 matches.
1. Most wickets in IPL
![]()
Mishra picked up 174 wickets in 162 IPL matches at a commendable economy of 7.37 and and average of 23.82. The wily spinner is easily one of the best spinners in the history of the IPL. There were two spells in Mishra’s IPL career in which he finished with 10+ wickets in successive seasons – 2008 to 2013 and 2016 to 2019).
Mishra is the third-highest wicket-taker in the IPL amongst spinners, the first two being Yuzvendra Chahal (221 wickets in 174 matches) and Piyush Chawla (192 wickets in 192 matches). Mishra could have been on top of the chart had he got regular chances in the playing XI.
