The Women’s Premier League 2027 auction is expected to generate strong interest in several young Indian players, and Gunalan Kamalini is among those who could attract significant franchise attention. Mumbai Indians released the wicketkeeper-batter ahead of the auction, with the reported reason being a calendar overlap between the WPL season and the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, which runs from January 21 to February 6, 2027.

Despite the availability concern that franchises will need to factor in, Kamalini’s dual-role ability, her presence in India’s senior international setup at a young age, and her long-term development potential could still make her a compelling name in the auction room. Having already been part of the Mumbai Indians setup, she is not unfamiliar with the demands of franchise cricket.

Here are three reasons why Kamalini could draw big bids at the WPL 2027 auction:

3. Long-term potential could make her an attractive investment

At 18, Kamalini has considerable time to develop her game and establish herself as a regular contributor in the WPL. Franchises looking beyond a single season could view her as a player who can grow into a more prominent role over the coming years. Young Indian players who offer multiple skills are considered valuable to teams planning for the future. If Kamalini continues to improve her batting and wicketkeeping, she could become an important part of a franchise’s domestic core.

Her experience across domestic T20 cricket, the India A setup, and senior international appearances provides a foundation for further development. Regular exposure to senior players, specialist coaching, and high-pressure matches can help a young cricketer refine her skills and sharpen her decision-making. However, her expected involvement in the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup could affect her availability during the WPL season. Franchises will need to weigh her long-term potential against the possibility of missing matches in the upcoming campaign.

2. International experience at a young age strengthens her profile

Despite her age, Kamalini has already gained exposure in India’s senior international setup. She made her Women’s T20I debut in the fifth T20I against Sri Lanka at Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, on December 30, 2025, scoring 12 on debut. She became the 90th woman to represent India in T20 Internationals and received her cap from captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Beyond that debut, she has been associated with India’s campaigns in the Women’s Asia Cup and the Asian Games, where she was picked as back-up wicketkeeper for the Aichi-Nagoya competition after Yastika Bhatia was dropped.

Playing alongside experienced international cricketers and being part of major tournaments can help youngsters understand the demands of elite-level cricket. Franchises assess a player’s ability to handle pressure and adapt to different match situations. Kamalini’s previous association with Mumbai Indians, for whom she signed for ₹1.6 crore in WPL 2025, also gives her familiarity with the franchise environment. While senior exposure alone does not guarantee a high auction price, it can help attract interest from teams looking to invest in young Indian talent.

1. Indian Wicketkeeper-batter combination makes her a valuable option

At just 18, Kamalini brings a dual-role skill set that can be particularly useful in a squad-capped competition like the WPL, where franchises must balance their playing XIs carefully. A wicketkeeper who can contribute with the bat gives teams greater flexibility when constructing their lineups, allowing them to reinforce batting resources without giving up a specialist keeping slot. Depending on team combination, Kamalini could be considered for a top-order or middle-order role.

The value of an Indian wicketkeeper-batter is even greater for franchises building around a strong domestic core, as such players free up overseas slots for other specialist roles. Kamalini’s skill set could therefore attract interest from franchises that need a young wicketkeeper capable of developing into a regular member of the playing XI. If multiple teams identify her as a solution to their wicketkeeping requirements, competition for her services could push her auction price higher.
