Mumbai Indians endured back-to-back difficult IPL campaigns, finishing 10th in IPL 2024 and 9th in IPL 2026, winning just four matches in each of those seasons. With IPL 2027 on the horizon, the franchise will be looking to rebuild their bowling attack around Jasprit Bumrah. One name that could transform their fortunes is Arshdeep Singh, currently 27 years old and at the peak of his powers.

The left-arm pacer has been India’s most consistent T20 bowler over the past few seasons, and a potential move to MI ahead of IPL 2027 would make their attack considerably more threatening.

Here are Top 3 reasons why having Arshdeep can help MI win sixth IPL trophy:

3. India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is

India’s leading wicket-taker in T20 Internationals, Arshdeep Singh had taken 151 wickets from 104 T20Is at an average of 20.74 as of November 2026. That tally puts him in the elite tier of being the first Indian to claim 150 T20I scalps, a landmark that underlines just how prolific he has been at the international level for the Men in Blue, ever since his debut in 2022.

He was also the first Indian bowler to reach 100 T20I wickets, and in the same calendar year he broke Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s record of 37 T20I wickets in a single year, finishing that year with 38. His IPL numbers are equally impressive: 102 wickets in 87 games for Punjab Kings since his debut in 2019, at an average of 26.87 and an economy of 9.50. He surpassed Piyush Chawla‘s PBKS record of 84 scalps to become the franchise’s all-time leading wicket-taker, and he reached his 200th T20 appearance during PBKS’s IPL 2026 match against Lucknow Super Giants in New Chandigarh.

2. Ability to bowl in the powerplay and at the death

One of Arshdeep’s most valuable qualities is his ability to operate with the new ball in the powerplay and then return to bowl in the death overs. He has grown into a reliable new-ball bowler since IPL 2022, playing a minimum of 14 games every season, and he has received wide recognition for his yorkers and his control at the death.

Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack has leaned heavily on Jasprit Bumrah, who was their highest wicket-taker in both IPL 2024 with 20 wickets and IPL 2022 with 15 wickets. Adding a bowler who can share the new ball and also close out innings would reduce the burden on Bumrah and give MI a genuine two-pronged pace threat across all phases.

1. The Arshdeep-Bumrah combination

Arshdeep and Bumrah have formed a formidable partnership for India in T20 Internationals, and together they were part of the Indian side that won two T20 World Cups. That familiarity and understanding of each other’s strengths could translate directly into IPL cricket if the two were to operate in the same franchise attack in 2027.

Bumrah has carried MI’s pace bowling largely on his own in recent seasons. A partner of Arshdeep’s calibre, someone who has already operated alongside him in high-pressure knockout cricket at the global level, would give MI a combination that few other franchises could match. Early in his international career, Arshdeep took seven wickets in five games against West Indies after his T20I debut and was the only bowler other than Bhuvneshwar Kumar to claim more than four wickets at the 2022 T20 Asia Cup, showing that his big-match temperament has been evident from the very beginning.
