Delhi Capitals confirmed Sourav Ganguly as their head coach for the IPL 2027 season on October 6, 2026. It is his first formal coaching role with the franchise, though he has been associated with DC since 2019 as an Advisor and later as Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams. Ganguly replaced Hemang Badani, who had been in charge for IPL 2025 and IPL 2026. Under Badani, DC finished sixth in the league stage in both IPL 2024 and IPL 2026, and the franchise is yet to win an IPL title.

Here are three coaches who could be better options than Sourav Ganguly for DC:

1. Adam Voges

Adam Voges stepped away from his eight-year stint as men’s head coach of Western Australia at the close of the 2025-26 domestic season, citing a desire to pursue global T20 franchise opportunities. That decision opened the door to a busy international coaching portfolio.

Voges holds the Perth Scorchers head coaching position in the Big Bash League and was appointed head coach of the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket. He has also worked as an assistant coach with the Trent Rockets in The Hundred and served as a consultant with Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, giving him direct experience of the Indian franchise environment.

2. Jonathan Trott

Jonathan Trott has built a strong reputation on the global coaching circuit. His most notable achievement was transforming Afghanistan into a competitive side capable of defeating higher-ranked teams, demonstrating an ability to construct tournament-ready structures under pressure.

Trott is currently serving as head coach of the England Lions development programme. He had previously taken charge of Pretoria Capitals in the SA20, a role he vacated by around August 2025 before Ganguly was appointed to that position. His record across formats and competitions makes him a credible candidate for a high-profile IPL role.

3. Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid guided India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title during his tenure as the national team’s head coach, and he is widely credited with developing India’s bench strength during that period. His coaching approach is regarded as calm and process-driven.

Dravid has prior IPL coaching experience, having been part of the Rajasthan Royals set-up. He is currently involved in franchise cricket beyond the subcontinent as chairman and co-owner of Dublin Guardians in the European T20 Premier League. His record at the highest level of the game would have made him a compelling choice for DC as they pursue a maiden IPL title in 2027.
