Zimbabwe’s Predicted Playing XI for Match 2 of the ODI Tri-Series against Afghanistan

Zimbabwe’s Predicted Playing XI for Match 2 of the ODI Tri-Series against Afghanistan

Zimbabwe will face Afghanistan in the second match of the UAE ODI Tri-Series on October 19 at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Captain Sikandar Raza will lead a side featuring experienced campaigners Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine alongside emerging talents Brian Bennett and Ben Curran. The match offers Zimbabwe an important opportunity to challenge Afghanistan’s strong spin attack and strengthen their position in a competition that also includes Bangladesh.

Zimbabwe will need a disciplined batting performance and early wickets with the ball to compete against Afghanistan, who boast quality players such as Rashid Khan, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Their predicted XI is likely to balance experienced batters, all-rounders and a pace attack capable of exploiting conditions in Abu Dhabi.

Openers: Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine, Ben Curran, and Brian Bennett to anchor the batting

Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine will be crucial to Zimbabwe’s batting plans after producing impressive performances against Bangladesh. Taylor scored 81 off 101 balls, while Ervine remained unbeaten on 93 off 106 deliveries as Zimbabwe posted 271/8. Their partnership helped the side recover from early setbacks and establish a competitive total.

Taylor’s experience makes him a key figure in the middle order, while Ervine’s ability to build an innings will be valuable against Afghanistan’s varied bowling attack. Both batters will need to show patience against Rashid Khan and the other spinners, who can create pressure through changes of pace and trajectory.

Brian Bennett and Ben Curran are likely to retain their opening positions despite falling cheaply against Bangladesh. Bennett was dismissed for a duck, while Curran managed six runs. Zimbabwe will want a stronger start against Afghanistan to avoid putting their middle order under pressure once again.

Bennett has the potential to score quickly, while Curran can look to settle in and build a partnership. Their challenge will be to negotiate the new ball, particularly if Afghanistan’s fast bowlers find movement early. A solid opening stand would allow Taylor and Ervine to build the innings without having to accelerate prematurely.

Middle order: Sikandar Raza, Wessly Madhevere, Tafadwa Tsiga, Brad Evans

Captain Sikandar Raza is expected to bat in the middle order and contribute with the ball. His experience in international cricket and ability to adapt to different match situations make him one of Zimbabwe’s most important players.

Raza was dismissed for four against Bangladesh, so he will be keen to make a greater impact with the bat. His off-spin could also be useful against Afghanistan’s right-handed batters, giving Zimbabwe another option during the middle overs.

Wessly Madhevere adds versatility to the lineup. He scored 17 off 15 balls in the opening match and can help maintain the scoring rate after the established batters have laid a foundation. Tafadzwa Tsiga could retain his place as a wicketkeeping and batting option, although Zimbabwe may consider Ryan Burl if they prefer an additional all-rounder.

Bowlers: Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, Wellington Masakadza

Blessing Muzarabani is likely to spearhead Zimbabwe’s pace attack. His height and ability to extract bounce could make him a challenging opponent for Afghanistan’s top order. He will be expected to strike early and prevent the opposition from building a strong opening partnership.

Brad Evans provides another seam-bowling option and can contribute useful runs lower down the order. Newman Nyamhuri could retain his place after scoring an unbeaten 21 against Bangladesh, adding valuable late runs as well as a left-arm pace option.

Wellington Masakadza is likely to provide spin support. His left-arm orthodox bowling can help control the middle overs and force Afghanistan’s batters to take risks. Zimbabwe may also consider Ryan Burl or Vincent Masekesa if they decide to adjust their bowling balance.
