Women’s World Cup 2025: Top 3 player battles to watch out for in match 2

Australia women and New Zealand women will clash in the second match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, with the match to be played at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on October 1, 2025.

The women’s team from Australia has been the side to beat in every ICC competition and enters the World Cup with a 2-1 series victory over the hosts, India. Australia appears poised to add another championship to their cabinet after winning the Women’s World Cup seven times already.

New Zealand will be keen to add another championship to their cabinet after winning the Women’s T20 World Cup. They will be coming into the tournament after playing T20Is, having not played a WODI since March 2025. They have faced the Indian teams and India A in two warm-up matches.

Here are the top 3 player battles to watch out for in match 2 of the Women’s World Cup 2025:

1. Suzie Bates vs Megan Schutt

Suzie Bates vs Megan Schutt

This player battle will be between New Zealand’s best batter, Suzie Bates, and Australia’s brilliant pacer, Megan Schutt. Suzie Bates has scored 5896 runs at an average of 39.83 in 171 WODIs, including 13 centuries and 37 fifties, with the highest score of 168. She will be tasked with giving the white ferns a grand start.

Australia will hope that pacer Megan Schutt will instead dismiss Bates for cheap to give them the advantage. Megan Schutt has 140 wickets at an economy of 4.26 in 102 WODIs, with the best bowling figures of 5/19. She has the ability to swing the new ball and bowl at a decent speed, enough to put Suzie Bates in trouble upfront.

2. Alyssa Healy vs Lea Tahuhu

Alyssa Healy will be eager to get some runs in her kitty, as she has been struggling with the bat in recent times. The Australian captain has made 3264 runs at an average of 34.35 and a strike rate of 97.90 in 118 WODIs, including five centuries and 18 fifties, with the highest score of 170. If Healy gets going, there is no bowler good enough to stop her, and that’s what New Zealand wouldn’t want.

They will employ their fastest pacer in Lea Tahuhu. The experienced pacer has faced off against Healy plenty of times and knows her inside out. She has taken 115 wickets at an economy of 4.53 in 97 WODIs, including the best bowling figures of 5/37. Despite her age, Tahuhu can still deliver with ease and if she gets Healy out early, it will hurt the Australian chances.

3. Amelia Kerr vs Ellyse Perry

The battle between Amelia Kerr and Ellyse Perry will be between two of the best all-rounders of the two teams, New Zealand and Australia, respectively. Amelia Kerr is the star all-rounder for New Zealand. She has scored 2167 runs at an average of 42.49 and taken 99 wickets at an economy of 4.58, including four centuries and one five-wicket haul, with the highest score of 232* and best bowling figures of 5/17.

Ellyse Perry, perhaps the greatest all-rounder in women’s cricket, has scored 4329 runs at an average of 49.19 and taken 166 wickets at an economy of 4.38 in 158 WODIs, including three centuries with the highest score of 112* and best bowling figures of 7/22. Their battle will be which all-rounder performs to their best to help their team win.
