Why ENG-W Lost to SA-W in the 1st Semi-Final of ICC Women’s World Cup 2025: 3 Key Reasons Behind the Defeat

Why ENG-W Lost to SA-W in the 1st Semi-Final of ICC Women's World Cup 2025: 3 Key Reasons Behind the Defeat

England Women were likely feeling confident at Guwahati, under the light of the stadium’s floodlights, as they were to face South Africa. However, from the first delivery, it was obvious that this match would be going towards South Africa. England came into play with intent at the start of the game; however, South Africa took control by demonstrating a perfect example of how to pace an inning, hit powerful shots, and remain calm. Laura Wolvaardt scored an incredible 169 off 143 deliveries in her batting display, which ultimately set the tone for the rest of the English team’s chase.

A Catastrophic Top-Order Collapse

Before England could even take its first breath, disaster struck. Three of England’s most consistent players, Amy Jones, Heather Knight, and Tammy Beaumont, were back in the pavilion by the end of the second over. There is no better way to describe the damage that losing three of your best batters for nought can do than “psychological carnage”. England’s top order batting woes were compounded by both Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka, who used early swing to make short work of off stump and pads alike. As a result, England’s middle order was left scrambling around, then stumbling into a hole, from which there was no escape. Whatever amount of experience may have been on display in the middle order could never possibly compensate for the loss of so many runs in the opening overs. With an early deficit of 0/3, chasing down 320 would be similar to attempting to run as fast as you can while wearing a rucksack full of rocks.

Laura Wolvaardt’s Unstoppable Masterclass

The early loss of the top order was the big hit, and Wolvaardt’s century was the final nail in the coffin. She walked out to bat with her timing spot on and her temperament as good as it gets. The beauty of the game shone through in every shot she played – each one perfectly placed and timed, with intelligent use of runs, and an air of composure that would have been rare for many players even in a lower-stakes match. England were desperate to find something different with their lines and lengths, and although Bell and Ecclestone were able to pick up a couple of wickets, Wolvaardt refused to give them anything. With each run she scored with Marizanne Kapp (her partner), she took another step closer to giving England no chance to reach the target. By the time Wolvaardt was out for 291/7, England weren’t just being asked to chase down a total they hadn’t seen before; England were being asked to climb over a psychological wall that they would never be able to get over.

Middle-Order Fragility and Tactical Missteps

Although England’s middle order was able to avoid much of the early carnage of the game, they were unable to create any real momentum throughout the rest of the match. Although Alice Capsey had a 50 and Nat Sciver-Brunt had a 64 that showed some flashes of brilliance in an otherwise weak middle order for England, the rest of the middle order collapsed quickly and cleanly against precision South African bowlers. Tailenders were cleaned up by the precision of Kapp, de Klerk, and Mlaba. England’s reliance on a few players and inability to adjust their batting strategy for the pitch conditions of Guwahati contributed greatly to the poor performance of the team. In addition, cautious shot selection, slow running between wickets, and missing key fielding opportunities furthered the large gap created.
