Why BH Lost to ST in the 9th Match of BBL 2025: 3 Key Reasons Behind the Defeat

For nearly 45 minutes in Canberra Brisbane Heat were able to rationalize this as something they could manage. The Sydney Thunder were certainly making runs, but they weren’t running at an alarming rate. Then Matthew Gilkes began to find some rhythm, and Sam Konstas discovered his timing, and before you knew it, the game had slipped out of the Brisbane Heat’s grasp without an immediate or panicked collapse. With the total now being 193 for the Sydney Thunder, the chase by the Brisbane Heat did feel slightly more oppressive than what the numbers would have indicated. The Brisbane Heat required conviction and accuracy; instead, the pursuit that ensued wavered between aggression and caution, never quite choosing one over the other.

Brisbane Heat Let the Middle Overs Slip with the Ball

The first and probably biggest problem was the way Brisbane Heat lost the battle for momentum during the Thunder’s innings. The heat started quite strongly; Shaheen Shah Afridi quickly picked off Gilkes. Then Jack Wildermouth continued bowling as he had all game, with good control and purpose. However, from that point forward, everything the Heat did lacked the energy of their early success. Konstas and Gilkes settled into a groove, which meant that by that time Heat were unable to regain the momentum they had lost.

Bartlett’s 52 from his four overs came at a rate of 13 per over; similarly, while Haskett gave away runs, he never threatened with wickets. With no consistent pressure being applied by the bowling unit as a whole, the Thunder were able to build upon their position (as opposed to needing to rebuild).

Shadab Khan’s Spell Squeezed the Life Out of the Chase

While the Heat were losing control with their bowling, their loss of confidence when batting happened quickly, thanks to Shadab Khan. While his 4 for 24 may have lacked flash, it was precision Munro fell at the worst possible time to allow the chase to gain momentum. Wildermouth hit back straight away and killed any momentum that had developed. When Renshaw was the only player hitting at the required run rate, he was dismissed at the time that Heat needed to shift into a higher gear.

Shadab did not simply take out batters; he took time. And since time is something you can’t borrow when chasing down 194 runs, by the time Alsop was stumped, the required run rate had entered into science fiction territory.

Brisbane Heat Never Found a Finishing Gear

Although Shadab did a lot of damage to the chase, Brisbane Heat still had some mathematical life left in their run chase. However they didn’t have a plan for finishing the game; Renshaw’s 43 runs off 28 balls provided a glimmer of hope as he scored alone, however there were no supporting acts from him or other batsmen; Hugh Weibgen was able to rotate well, yet never threatened to get out and attack, Alsop stopped scoring, and the two late sixes Max Bryant hit seemed more for show than to help Brisbane Heat win.

Heat’s total score finished on 7.95 runs per over, just a little less than the 9 runs needed per over. The difference says it all. There was no 15-ball burst, no well-thought-out risk or late order explosion. Compare that with the way Thunder used their last few overs with Billings and Sams extracting as much value as possible from each ball in a calm manner. Same weather conditions, very different strategy.
