Waqar Younis’ top 3 bowling figures in Test Cricket

Nicknamed ‘The Burewala Express’, Waqar Younis is regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time. His ability to reverse swing the ball at sheer pace was a delight to watch and always a nightmare for the opposition batters. The two Pakistani pace sensations – Younis and Wasim Akram – were one of the most feared bowling pairs in cricket history.

The holder of 789 international wickets, Younis has represented Pakistan in 87 Tests and 262 ODIs. The 52-year-old’s stats in red-ball cricket are quite formidable. The right-arm pacer has taken a total of 373 Test wickets at an average of 23.56. He has taken five or more wickets in a Test innings 22 times. He also took 10 or more wickets in a match 5 times in his career.

Let’s take a look at Waqar Younis’ top 3 bowling performances in Test cricket:

Waqar Younis recorded his career-best bowling figures in the third Test of the New Zealand tour of Pakistan in 1990. After being asked to bat first, Pakistan ended up scoring just 102 in the first innings. They need someone to step up to restrict the Black Caps to a low score. Younis wreaked havoc with a 7-wicket haul and the visitors were bowled out for 217. In the second innings, Pakistan batters found a rhythm and managed to score 357. Younis did not let the Kiwi batters breathe in the chase as he took five wickets to lead Pakistan to victory by 65 runs.

Waqar Younis’ 7-wicket haul thrashed New Zealand in the second innings of the second Test in Lahore. The visitors had scored huge in order to go past Pakistan’s first innings lead. However, they were bundled out for 287. Younis single-handedly crushed the Kiwis, picking up 7 wickets and conceding just 86 runs. The Men in Green won by 9 wickets.
