Top three performances of Trent Boult in Tests

Trent Boult is one of the finest bowlers to come out of New Zealand. Part of a feared new-ball pairing with Tim Southee, Trent Boult has been a consistent performer for the Black Caps across all formats, picking up over 600 wickets in international cricket. He could swing the new ball both ways and could extract reverse swing with the old ball at his high pace.

Boult has had a fine Test career, picking up 317 wickets at an average of 27.49 and a strike rate of 54.9. He has also picked up 10 five-wicket hauls, and evolved into one of the key strike bowlers for the Kiwis in the format. He is the fourth-highest wicket-taker for New Zealand in Test cricket.

Here are the top three performances of Trent Boult in Tests

3) 6/30, 3/77 vs Sri Lanka, Hagley Oval, 2018

New Zealand were under the pump in the second Test at Christchurch against Sri Lanka, having been bowled out for 178 in their first innings, courtesy of a Suranga Lakmal five-wicket haul. Boult’s partner in crime, Southee, broke the game open with three early wickets, on which Boult followed up with a fine spell of reverse-swing bowling. He picked up the final six wickets to leave the Lankan Lions bowled out for 104. New Zealand piled on the misery by scoring a mammoth 585 for 4 with big centuries from Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls. Chasing 660, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 236, with Boult finishing with figures of 3 for 77.

2) 6/32, 3/67 vs England, Eden Park, 2018

New Zealand hosted England in a Test series in 2018, with the first Test played at Eden Park in Auckland. Bowling first, Boult was the wrecker-in-chief as he picked up four wickets in his opening spell to leave England reeling at 18 for 5. He had hios fifth wicket of the day in just his seventh over, and bowled a marathon spell of 10.4 overs to finish with figures of 6/32 as England were bowled out for just 58. The Kiwis declared their innings at 427 for 8 with centuries from Nicholls and Kane Williamson. England were then bowled out for 320, losing by an innings and 49 runs as Boult picked up figures of 3 for 67 in 29 overs, and having removed Alistair Cook and Joe Root, England’s marquee batters, in both innings.

1) 6/40, 4/40 vs West Indies, Basin Reserve, 2013

Boult’s best match performance came against the West Indies back in 2013, in the second Test in Wellington. Being put into bat, the Kiwis put on a score of 441 courtesy of a century from Ross Taylor. The West Indies started their innings strongly, before being dented by wickets. With the score at 119 for 3, Boult produced a fine spell of old-ball wizardry, picking up the final six wickets as the Windies were bundled out for 193. Being made to follow on, Boult once again was in the act with the old ball, clearing up the tail to finish the second innings with 4 for 40 and match figures of 10 for 80, his first ten-wicket haul in Tests.
