Top three most successful T20I captains of all time

T20 format is known to be the saviour of the beautiful game and, since its inception, the fans have poured in numbers to see great teams come up against each other. But who are the leaders of these great international teams competing in the shortest format.

One element that can inspire the team is leadership. Aaron Finch,Kumar Sangakara, MS Dhoni, and Darren Sammy spring to mind when we discuss outstanding captains. But if we were to talk about statistics, who are the most accomplished T20I captains globally, only a few names spring to mind.

1) MS Dhoni

The top of our list is Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the former leader of the Indian T20 Team. Yet, sometimes it’s difficult to understand the numbers. Up until 2016–2017, MS Dhoni served as the permanent leader. In five 20-20 World Cups, he served as the team’s captain.

Having said that, the majority of his victories have come against formidable opposition. We must not also overlook the fact that he turned the Indian squad into an unstoppable force. Under his direction, the Indian side won the inaugural 20-20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007, but they were unable to repeat their victory.

MS Dhoni then wrote his name in the history books after he led India to win the 2011 World Cup trophy.

2) Darren Sammy

Darren Sammy won two 20-20 World Cups for West Indies and was a fantastic player and captain. Yet he only achieved great success for a brief time before experiencing problems with the cricket board, which forced him to retire.

Dhoni has won 50 World Cups and the Champions Trophy, in addition to his 20-20 victory. So, although Sammy had tasted a lot of success on paper, it didn’t excuse the fact that he only succeeded in just two competitions.

3) Aaron Finch

Aaron Finch, Australia’s longest-serving skipper in the shortest format of the game, led his country to their first T20I championship two years ago. Despite that, Finch’s standing in the Australian team came under scrutiny after the Men from Down were unable to successfully defend their T20 World Cup title at home in 2022.

He retired last year as Australia’s most successful T20I captain. Unfortunately, under his direction, hosts Australia did not advance past the group stage of the T20 World Cup last year.
