Top 3 West Indies’ players to watch out for in first T20I against India

Top 3 West Indies' players to watch out for in first T20I against India

West Indies will begin their five-match T20I series against India when the two sides meet in the opening game at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on October 6. After the Caribbean side finished the ODI series on a high by winning the third match in New Chandigarh, they will be hoping to carry that momentum into the shortest format.

West Indies have named a strong T20I squad for the series, with Shai Hope set to lead the side. The visitors have also recalled experienced batter Shimron Hetmyer, while exciting opener Kamil Pooran has received his maiden T20I call-up following an impressive Caribbean Premier League campaign.

The Caribbean side will face a formidable Indian team led by Shreyas Iyer. India have several quality bowlers, including Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi, which should make the contest an intriguing test for the West Indies batters.

Here are the top 3 West Indies players to watch out for in 1st T20I against India:

1. Shai Hope

Shai Hope will be one of the most important players for West Indies in the series opener. The wicketkeeper-batter has been entrusted with captaincy responsibilities and will have the dual responsibility of leading the side and providing stability at the top of the batting order.

Hope has already demonstrated his ability to perform against India during the ongoing tour. He produced a sensational unbeaten 162 in the third ODI at New Chandigarh, guiding West Indies to a memorable chase of India’s 351-run target.

Although the T20 format demands a significantly higher scoring rate, Hope possesses the range of shots required to adapt his game. His experience at international level could be particularly valuable against India’s varied bowling attack.

The opening match could also see Hope take on India’s new-ball bowlers, with Arshdeep Singh likely to be one of the major threats. The left-arm pacer has an excellent record against West Indies in T20Is, having taken 14 wickets against them at an average of 22.28.

If Hope can survive the initial spell and establish himself, he could provide the platform around which West Indies’ aggressive middle order can build.

2. Shimron Hetmyer

Shimron Hetmyer is another West Indies batter who could have a major influence on the opening T20I.

The left-hander has returned to the West Indies T20I squad after being given an extended recovery period following the CPL. He is known for his aggressive strokeplay and ability to accelerate rapidly once he settles at the crease.

Hetmyer’s inclusion gives West Indies another experienced option in the middle order alongside Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford. The trio could pose a significant challenge for India’s bowlers during the middle and death overs.

Hetmyer will particularly relish the opportunity to attack spin. India have included Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi in their squad, meaning the West Indies batter could have an important role in disrupting India’s middle-overs plans.

His recent CPL campaign also provides reason for optimism. Hetmyer produced two centuries during the tournament, underlining his ability to score big runs in the T20 format.

If West Indies lose early wickets, Hetmyer could be asked to rebuild the innings before switching gears. Alternatively, if Hope and the top order provide a strong foundation, he could enter with the freedom to attack from the outset.

3. Kamil Pooran

Kamil Pooran could be the most intriguing West Indies player to watch in the first T20I.

The right-handed batter has received his maiden T20I call-up after an outstanding CPL 2026 campaign. Pooran scored 273 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 159.64, earning recognition from the West Indies selectors.

His aggressive approach makes him a potentially dangerous option against India’s bowling attack. Pooran is likely to look for boundaries early rather than spending too much time settling at the crease.

However, making his international debut against India in Lucknow will be a significant challenge. India possess multiple bowling options capable of testing him, with Mayank Yadav’s pace presenting a particularly different proposition.

The youngster’s ability to handle high-quality international bowling could therefore be one of the key storylines of the match. If he reproduces even a portion of his CPL form, West Indies could have a dangerous new batting option for the T20I cycle leading towards the 2028 T20 World Cup.
