Top 3 talking points from AUS vs ENG clash in ODI World Cup 2023

Top 3 talking points from AUS vs ENG clash in ODI World Cup 2023

Australia registered their fifth win on the bounce after a shaky start to their World Cup campaign. Now they are looking like proper contenders to go all the way in this tournament. Whereas England lost their fifth match on the trot which has put them in a precarious situation regarding qualification to the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Let’s take a look at the top 3 talking points from AUS vs ENG clash in the ODI World Cup 2023:

1. Yet another batting disaster for England

England’s batting display has been abysmal in this tournament. Once it used to be their strength but in this World Cup their batting has proved to be a bane. Once again, their batting department failed to chase a reasonable target. At this point, their confidence seems to be at rock bottom which makes any total a tough one to chase for them. There were two fifty-plus scores from England but apart from that there’s nothing to show on the scoreboard.

2. Australia’s overdependence on the openers

One thing that is pretty evident in this Aussie campaign is that they are heavily reliant on their opening pair to give them a quickfire start and set a platform for the rest of the batting order. Against England, both David Warner and Travis Head failed and as a result, Australia failed to put up a big target on the board. Though they won the match comfortably in the end, but against tougher opposition it would be difficult for Australia to overcome these challenges. The absence of Glenn Maxwell also proved costly and the team management would be hoping that he returns very quickly.

3. England’s Champions Trophy spot in danger

One of the biggest talking points in this tournament would be England struggling to qualify for a world tournament. England’s abysmal World Cup campaign has put their Champions Trophy spot at stake. Now they need to win the rest of the matches to make sure that they qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy. If they fail to do that it would be a horrible end to an era that has achieved so much for English cricket. Buttler & Co. must step up at this moment, leaving aside their failures in this tournament, to make sure that they avoid arguably the biggest tragedy in their cricket history
