All the franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) announced their retention list on October 31. There were some shocking and unexpected retentions that no one saw coming. Most of the rumors which were circulated on social media also proved true.
Players like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jos Buttler, Mitchell Starc, and many others were not retained by their franchises and are set to be part of the upcoming auction. But there were some retentions which no one expected to happen.
Here are the top 3 surprising retentions of IPL 2025:
1. Shivam Dube

Shivam Dube had a decent run in the IPL 2024 season for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) due to which he was also included in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad where he played all the matches. It won’t be wrong to say that Dube has almost become one of the permanent members of the Indian side in T20I. However, his retention was quite shocking as players like Deepak Chahar and Ajinkya Rahane were ignored by CSK to retain Dube who has been criticized a lot for his ineffective footwork.
2. Yash Dayal

Yash Dayal, who came into the limelight after getting hit for 5 sixes in an over by Rinku Singh, has done pretty well in the last IPL edition for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The medium pacer was one of the best bowlers of the franchise, however, pacers like Mohammed Siraj and Vyshak Vijay Kumar were ignored which was a surprising move by the franchise.
3. Prabhsimran Singh

Punjab Kings (PBKS) made only two retentions for IPL 2025 and are set to revamp their squad for a fresh start. Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh are the two retentions of the team. Retaining Shashank was quite reasonable as he played a few match-winning knocks of PBKS in the previous season. But retaining Prabhsimran ahead of players like Arshdeep Singh and Jitesh Sharma didn’t go well with the fans.
