An era of greatness came to an end on Monday, May 12, 2025, as the legendary India batter Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket. Former batter and skipper hung his boots in the longest format of the game with an everlasting legacy behind him and the historic footprints to walk on for the generations to come.
Kohli was nearing a lot of historic milestones in Test cricket, but all of them are now left unfinished as the legend bid adieu to the traditional format of the game. Now, the fans and experts feel that it would not be an easy task for the youngsters to fill in the massive shoes of Virat Kohli while batting at number four for India in Tests.
With that said, here we’ll have a look at 3 records that Virat Kohli could’ve achieved in Test cricket.
The historic 10,000 runs milestone

The Indian stalwart played 123 matches in his illustrious career in the whites for India, batting in 210 innings of these matches. During his wonderful Test career, Kohli managed to score a total of 9230 runs in 210 innings, with a magnificent batting average of 46.85, smashing 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries, alongside seven double centuries.
Everyone was hoping that Kohli would play for India in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20. But everything came to an end as he curtained off his career in the format. If Kohli had played the Test series against England, followed by the home assignment against South Africa, he would’ve definitely touched the historic milestone of 10,000 Test runs to become the fourth Indian batter to do so.

Most Test runs in India vs South Africa

Team India is also scheduled to play a two-match Test series against South Africa at home later this year. Virat Kohli was also being considered in India’s Test plans for the series against the Proteas, and one more record was waiting to be broken by or achieved by him.
The 36-year-old was just 334 runs behind former legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar to become the leading run-scorer in India vs South Africa Tests. Sachin had scored 1741 runs while Kohli was following him, scoring 1408 runs against South Africa. It was also one of the records that Kohli could’ve broken if he had not retired from the Tests.
The iconic 5k runs each in SENA and Asian conditions

Out of his 9230 Test runs, Kohli scored 4894 runs on foreign soil, and the upcoming England tour was a golden chance for him to complete 5000 Test runs in the away conditions. He was just 106 runs away from this historic achievement, and the England tour would’ve been a perfect chance for him to make this reality.
Besides that, he also scored 4789 runs in Asian countries and India’s three Test assignments in the sub-continent region were a big chance for him to complete 5000 runs in these conditions as well. If it could’ve been possible, it was a chance to for the legendary batter to become the only batter to achieve this feat.
