It was on this day, November 16 in 1971, when great Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis was born. He was born in Vehari, Punjab, but was raised by his father in the United Arab Emirates, who worked in Sharjah.

Waqar made his Test debut for Pakistan against India in 1989 in the same match as Sachin Tendulkar. He went on to have a storied career as a leading pacer in the world and even captained Pakistan. He took 373 wickets at an average of 23.56 in 87 Tests, with 22 five-wicket hauls and five ten-fers, including the best bowling figures of 7/76 and 13/135.

3. 6/34 & 5/85 vs Sri Lanka, Kandy, 1994

This was the third Test of the three-match series between Sri Lanka and Pakistan and was played in Kandy in 1994. Saleem Malik won the toss and bowled first. Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis routed Sri Lanka for 71 runs in the first innings. Akram took 4/32, while Waqar started with 6/34 before Pakistan responded with 357/9d, thanks to Inzamam Ul Haq’s 100* and fifties by Aamer Sohail and Basit Ali.

Sri Lanka did better in the second essay, scoring, scoring 234 runs on the back of half-centuries from Hashan Tillkaratne and Ruwan Kalpage, but they lost the game by an innings and 52 runs as Waqar returned with figures of 5/85, taking 11 wickets in the game to be named the Player of the Match.

2. 7/91 & 6/44 vs Zimbabwe, Karachi, 1993

Zimbabwe and Pakistan clashed in the first Test of the three-match series in 1993 in Karachi, and Waqar won the toss and chose to bat. Pakistan posted 423/8d as Aamer Sohail, Shoaib Mohammad, Javed Miandad, and Rashid Latif scored fifties.

Zimbabwe responded with 289 in the first innings, with Alistair Campbell and Andy Flower making fifties, but Waqar shone with 7/91. Pakistan declared their second innings for 131/3 and set Zimbabwe 266. Waqar starred again, taking 6/44 to take his tally to 13 wickets in the match, as Zimbabwe were folded for 134, losing the Test by 131 runs. Waqar was once again the Player of the Match.

1. 7/76 & 5/54 vs New Zealand, Faisalabad, 1990

This was the third test of the three-match series in 1990 between Pakistan and New Zealand and was played in Faisalabad. Pakistan made 102 batting first as Chris Pringle routed them with 7/52. In response, New Zealand mustered 217 runs, with Ian Smith making 61. Waqar was the chief destroyer with 7/91.

In the second innings, Pakistan made 357, with Shoaib Mohammed making 142. Set 243 runs to win, New Zealand managed just 177 runs as Waqar claimed 5/54, taking the match tally to 12. He was named both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his performances.
