Top 3 performances of Viv Richards in ODI cricket

Sir Vivian Richards, while best known as one of the greatest Test batsmen in cricket history, was equally destructive in One Day Internationals. In an era when ODI cricket was still evolving, Richards redefined batting with his aggressive style, dominating bowlers and setting the template for modern limited-overs cricket. In 187 ODIs, he scored 6,721 runs at an average of 47, including 11 centuries and 45 fifties, often single-handedly changing the outcome of matches.

Here are top three performances of Viv Richards in ODI cricket:

181 vs Sri Lanka, Karachi, 1987

In the 1987 Reliance World Cup, Richards showcased his mastery over the limited-overs format against Sri Lanka. Batting in Karachi, he scored a blistering 181 off 125 balls, including 16 fours and seven sixes, at a strike rate of 144.80. Desmond Haynes supported him with 105, forging a 182-run partnership for the third wicket, followed by a 116-run fourth-wicket stand with Gus Logie as West Indies posted a commanding total of 360/4 in 50 overs. Sri Lanka, chasing 361, struggled under the relentless pressure, managing only 169/4, with Arjuna Ranatunga top-scoring 52*. Carl Hooper’s 2/39 further crippled the chase, highlighting Richards’ match-winning impact.

189* vs England, Manchester, 1984

One of Richards’ most legendary ODI innings came during the 1984 England tour. In the first ODI at Manchester, West Indies batted first and scored 272/9, with Richards contributing an unbeaten 189 from 170 balls, including 21 fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 111.17. In an extraordinary last-wicket partnership, Richards and Michael Holding added 106 runs to boost the total. England struggled in reply, bowled out for 168, as Joel Garner (3/18), Michael Holding (2/23), and Richards himself (2/45) ensured a comprehensive 104-run victory despite Allan Lamb scoring 75.

153* vs Australia, Melbourne, 1979

Richards’ dominance peaked against Australia in the 1979 Benson & Hedges World Series Cup. At Melbourne, he scored a commanding 153* off 130 balls, hitting 16 fours and a six at a strike rate of 117.69. Desmond Haynes supported him with 80, helping West Indies post 271/2 in 48 overs. Australia could manage only 191/8 in their 48 overs, with Allan Border top-scoring 44. West Indies’ bowlers, including Andy Roberts (2/33), Michael Holding (2/29), and Collis King (2/40), ensured an 80-run victory. Richards’ innings not only dominated the scoreboard but also psychologically dismantled the Australian batting lineup.
