Top 3 performances of Virat Kohli in ODIs

Virat Kohli will be celebrating his 37th birthday on November 5, 2025. He was born on this day in 1988 in Delhi to Saroj and Premnath Kohli. His India ODI debut came in 2008 against Sri Lanka at Dambulla.

Kohli became a mainstay of Indian batting from 2010 onwards and was part of India’s 2011 World Cup and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy-winning squads. He took over as India captain in 2016 and led India to the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 World Cup knockouts.

Kohli made 14255 runs at an average of 57.71 in 305 ODIs, including 51 centuries and 75 fifties, with the best score of 183. He also holds the record for most runs in a World Cup edition, scoring 765 runs in the 2023 World Cup with three hundreds and six fifties and a best score of 117.

This was a world record-breaking knock by Virat Kohli and came at the grand stage of the ICC World Cup 2023 semi-final between India and New Zealand in Mumbai. India won the toss and chose to bat first. Shubman Gill made 80*, but it was Virat Kohli, who hammered 117 with nine fours and two sixes, taking India to 397/4. Shreyas Iyer also made 105 in 70 balls with eight sixes and four fours.

New Zealand managed 327, with Daryl Mitchell scoring 134, as Mohammed Shami took 7/57. Virat Kohli’s century was his 50th in ODI cricket, and it broke the world record of Sachin Tendulkar, who had 49 tons in the format. Sachin was in the audience to see Kohli break his record and applauded the ace India batter.

While Kohli is not known for his slam-bang way of batting, especially in ODI cricket, in a match against Australia in the 2013 ODI series in Jaipur, Kohli showed he could be brutal if he wanted. Australia posted 359/5, with George Bailey making 92* and the top five Australian batters scoring fifties.

In response, Shikhar Dhawan made 95 and added 176 with Rohit Sharma, who made 141*. But it was Virat Kohli, who brutally hammered 102* in only 52 balls with eight fours and seven sixes. This remains the fastest ODI century by an Indian in men’s cricket, and Kohli broke the record of Virender Sehwag.

This knock by Virat Kohli put him on the map of world cricket, as it came against arch-rivals Pakistan. India clashed with the Men in Green in the 2012 Asia Cup match in Dhaka, and Pakistan posted 329/6 in 50 overs with centuries by Mohammed Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed.

After Gautam Gambhir got out for a duck, Sachin Tendulkar (52) and Virat Kohli took over, adding 133 runs for the second wicket. Once Tendulkar got out, Kohli got into action, scoring a brilliant 183 in 148 balls with 22 fours and one six. He negotiated the likes of Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi, and Wahab Riaz with precision and helped India win the game by six wickets.
