Tim Southee in Test Cricket is one of the finest bowlers to have played for New Zealand. He formed a lethal combination with Trent Boult, and together, they tormented many teams for several years. On that note, let’s take a look at the top three performances of the right-arm speedster in Test cricket.
3. 5/55 & 77* vs England (March 2008)
Tim Southee made his Test debut against England at McLean Park in Napier in March 2008. He was only 19 years old at the time. Southee bagged a five-for, conceding 55 runs in 23.1 overs in the first innings, helping the Kiwis dismiss England for 253. However, the New Zealand batters faltered in the first innings, as the Three Lions took a first-innings lead of 85 runs. In their second innings, the tourists declared at 467/7. Chasing 553 was always going to be an uphill task. However, Southee used it as an opportunity to showcase his batting skills, as he smashed an unbeaten 77 off 40 balls. While the Black Caps lost the match by 121 runs, the Whangarei-born earned a lot of praise for his gritty performance.
2. 10/108 vs England (May 2013)
Tim Southee recorded his best Test match figures in a game against England at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. He picked up a four-for in the first innings, as England were bowled out for 232. In reply, the Kiwis could only manage 207. Southee followed up his first-innings heroics with a six-wicket haul in the second innings. The home side was bowled out for 213. Chasing a 239-run target, New Zealand could only manage 68 runs. New Zealand lost the encounter by 170 runs but Southee stood out with his sensational bowling performance across both innings.
1. 6/80 and 2/60 vs Pakistan (November 2016)
Southee produced a match-winning performance against Pakistan in the second Test at Seddon Park, Hamilton, in November 2016. The right-arm fast bowler scored a quickfire 29 runs off 28 balls in the first innings as New Zealand finished on 271. He was the wrecker-in-chief in Pakistan’s first innings, finishing with figures of 6/80. The tourists were bowled out for 216. In reply, the Black Caps declared at 313/5. Southee accounted for two wickets as the Asian giants were bowled out for 230. Pakistan lost the match by 138 runs and Southee was fittingly adjudged Player of the Match.
