The partnership he forged with Rahul Dravid (318 for the second wicket) still remains the second-largest stand in the World Cup. India ended up winning the contest by a whopping margin of 157 runs.

This was one of the most well-paced innings of Ganguly in the context of the match. He anchored the Indian innings right till the end after they had won the toss and opted to bat first against the Proteas in the second semi-final of the ICC KnockOut Trophy (now called Champions Trophy). His 142-ball knock at the Gymkhana Club Ground in Nairobi comprised a total of 11 fours and six sixes. India eventually ended up winning the game by 95 runs to book their berth in the final of the tournament.

It was the third final of the best-of-three finals with the scoreline tied at one apiece. It was yet another instance where Ganguly played a composed knock to keep the required run rate in check. He could not quite stay till the end of the game. However, his knock was enough to grant India a three-wicket win with one ball to spare. Ganguly was also awarded the Player of the Match award.
