Top 3 performances of Shikhar Dhawan in ODIs

Shikhar Dhawan is among the most underrated ODI openers in Indian cricket. He finished his international career with 6793 runs from 167 ODIs at an average of 44.11 and a strike rate of 91.36. His performances in ICC events were remarkable. Dhawan smashed 17 centuries and 39 fifties during his ODI career.

Let’s take a look at Shikhar Dhawan’s top three performances in ODI cricket:

3. 143 vs Australia (March 2019)

Dhawan registered his highest score in ODI cricket against Australia on March 10, 2019, in Mohali. The left-handed batter took the Australian bowlers to the cleaners, scoring 143 off just 115 deliveries. He hit 18 fours and three sixes during his knock, finishing with a strike rate of 124.34. Dhawan helped India post 358/9 in the first innings. However, the Aussies chased it in 47.5 overs, with four wickets to spare.

2. 137 vs South Africa (February 2015)

This was an important match in the 2015 ODI World Cup between India and South Africa in Melbourne. Dhawan lost his opening partner, Rohit Sharma, in the third over, but ensured that India did not have to worry about the initial setback. He anchored the innings, helping the likes of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to bat around him. Dhawan eventually departed after scoring 137 off 146 balls, hitting 16 fours and two sixes. India posted 307/7 in their 50 overs. The Proteas were bowled out for just 177, giving the Men in Blue a comprehensive win.

1. 117 vs Australia (June 2019)

In this 2019 ODI World Cup encounter between India and Australia, Dhawan took a hit on his left thumb off a Pat Cummins delivery. The former had suffered a hairline fracture due to this blow. However, he battled pain and scored a 109-ball 117 at The Oval. India finished on 352/5 in their 50 overs before dismissing Australia for 316. Dhawan, who was adjudged Player of the Match, missed the rest of the tournament due to his injury.
