Apart from tests, Mohammed Shami has excelled for India in the 50-over format as well. He made his India ODI debut in 2013 against Pakistan and immediately became an integral part of the XI. Shami also played in the ICC World Cup tournaments in 2015, 2019, and 2023 and was part of the Indian team that won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Mohammed Shami has been excellent in white-ball cricket, as he bowls the Test lengths in ODIs as well. He makes the batters play him in a conventional way, as he gets the white ball to move off the seam and in the air as well. Shami also possesses a killer yorker for the death overs, making him one of the best in the business in one-dayers.
Here are the top 3 performances of Mohammed Shami in ODIs:
3. 5/54 vs New Zealand, 2023 World Cup
The ICC World Cup 2023 was Mohammed Shami’s best performance with the white ball. It was surprising that Shami only played for India after missing the first four games because Hardik Pandya got injured. He came into the Indian XI and transformed the Men in Blue completely.
New Zealand batted first in Dharamshala in the 2023 World Cup, posting 274 runs, with Daryl Mitchell making 130 and Rachin Ravindra making 75. The final Kiwi total could have been more, but M Shami had other plans. Playing his first game in the World Cup, he picked 5/54 in 10 overs, including wickets of Will Young, Mitchell, and Mitchell Santner to help India win the game.
2. 5/18 vs Sri Lanka, 2023 World Cup
India were on a roll when they faced Sri Lanka in Mumbai. Asked to bat first, India went on a rampage and posted 357/8 in 50 overs on the back of Shubman Gill (92), Virat Kohli made (88), and Shreyas Iyer (82) as Sri Lankan bowlers failed to contain them.
When it came to batting, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah blew away the top order, reducing Sri Lanka to four wickets for three runs. Then Mohammed Shami came on to bowl and demolished the remainder of the batting, taking 5/18 as Sri Lanka was bowled out for 55 and lost the game by a whopping 302 runs.
1. 7/57 vs New Zealand, 2023 World Cup
India and New Zealand faced off in the World Cup semi-final for the second time in two editions. India won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring 397/4 in 50 overs thanks to Shubman Gill (80), Rohit Sharma (47), and centuries from Virat Kohli (117) and Shreyas Iyer (105 in just 70 balls).
New Zealand needed someone to go big, but Mohammed Shami had other ideas. Despite the 134 from Daryl Mitchell and 63 by Kane Williamson, Shami blew away the New Zealand innings with 7/57, bowling them out for 327 and helping India win by 70 runs. Shami’s 7/57 was not only his best bowling in ODIs but also the best bowling figures by any Indian in ODIs.
