Top 3 performances of Kevin O’Brien in international cricket

Kevin O’Brien is widely regarded as one of the finest cricketers Ireland has ever produced. For years, he served as the poster boy of Irish cricket, delivering impactful performances across formats. Over the course of his international career, O’Brien scored 258 runs in three Tests, 3619 runs in 153 ODIs, and 1973 runs in 110 T20Is. Many of his best knocks came in high-pressure situations, often inspiring Ireland to memorable victories.

Here are top three performances of Kevin O’Brien in international cricket:

98* vs Scotland, Amstelveen, 2010

In an ICC World Cricket League Division One clash between Ireland and Scotland, O’Brien delivered a match-winning all-round performance. Scotland posted 232 in 48.5 overs, thanks largely to 98 from Fraser Watts and 80 from Preston Mommsen, while the rest of the batting lineup failed to capitalise. Ireland’s bowlers shared the spoils, with four players picking up two wickets each. O’Brien contributed with the ball as well, finishing with figures of 2/46 in nine overs, including a maiden.

Chasing 233, Ireland needed composure, and O’Brien provided exactly that. He scored an unbeaten 98 off 104 balls, striking four boundaries and three sixes. Partnering with Andrew White, who made 79, O’Brien guided Ireland to victory in 44.5 overs, showcasing his ability to anchor a chase under pressure.

142 vs Kenya, Nairobi, 2007

In another ICC World Cricket League Division One encounter, O’Brien produced a stunning individual performance against Kenya. Ireland posted 284/4 in 50 overs, with William Porterfield scoring 104. However, it was O’Brien who stole the show with a magnificent 142 off 125 balls, hitting 10 fours and six sixes at a strike rate of 113.60.

Despite his brilliance, Kenya narrowly chased down the target in 49 overs, winning by one wicket. Nehemiah Odhiambo (66) and Thomas Odoyo (61) led the charge for Kenya. Though Ireland lost the match, O’Brien’s innings remains one of the most dominant displays by an Irish batter during that period.

113 vs England, Bengaluru, 2011

O’Brien’s most iconic innings came during the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup against England in Bengaluru. England posted a massive 327/8, powered by 92 from Jonathan Trott and 81 from Ian Bell. Ireland’s chase looked daunting, but O’Brien delivered one of the greatest World Cup knocks ever.

He smashed 113 off just 63 balls, including 13 fours and six sixes, scoring with a strike rate of 179.36. His innings turned the match on its head as Ireland completed a historic chase in 49.1 overs. The knock remains one of the most celebrated performances in World Cup history and cemented O’Brien’s legacy in international cricket.
