It was on this day, October 16, that legendary South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis was born in 1975 in Pinelands, Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa. He had one of the most decorated careers in international cricket and is counted as perhaps one of the greatest all-rounders to play the game.

Apart from international cricket,  Kallis also did well in the T20 leagues, like the Big Bash League and the Indian Premier League. He was prolific in the IPL, scoring 2427 runs at an average of 28.55, including 17 fifties and a best score of 89*. He won two IPL titles with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and 2014.

3. 3/13 for KKR v SRH, IPL 2013

Kolkata Knight Riders clashed with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 17th match of the IPL 2013 in Kolkata. KKR won the toss and chose to bat first. KKR posted 180/4 in 20 overs, with Gautam Gambhir top-scoring with 53 and Kallis (41) and Eoin Morgan (47) contributing as well.

Kallis then dismantled the SRH top order with wickets of well-set Parthiv Patel (27) and Cameron White (34). He then accounted for Thisara Perera for 36, who was looking dangerous, helping KKR keep SRH to 132/7 and winning the match by 48 runs. Kallis starred with 3/13 in his four overs. 

2. 72 for KKR v MI, IPL 2014

Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians clashed in the first match of the IPL 2014 in Abu Dhabi. KKR batted first and managed to post 163/5 solely with three batters contributing. Kallis made 72 in 46 balls with five fours and three sixes, while Manish Pandey made 64 in 53 balls with six fours and two sixes. Kallis held the innings together, while wickets fell in a heap at the other end.

His knock proved to be match-winning as KKR bowled MI out for 122/7 in 20 overs, with Ambati Rayudu top-scoring with 48. The 41-run win, thanks to Kallis, who was named Player of the Match, started what ended up as the second IPL winning season for Kolkata Knight Riders.

1. 89* & 1/39 for RCB v KXIP, IPL 2010

Kallis had made his IPL debut for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and had some memorable performances for them. One such all-round performance came against Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2010 in Bengaluru. KXIP batted first after winning the toss and posted 203/3 in 20 overs, thanks to Ravi Bopara’s 77, Manvinder Bisla’s 75, and Mahela Jayawardena’s 13-ball 26*. 

Out to chase, Kallis opened the innings for RCB and held one end up. He made 89* in 55 balls with eight fours and five sixes while Robin Uthappa made 51 runs, and Manish Pandey made 38 runs as RCB won by eight wickets. Kallis won the Player of the Match for his 89* and one wicket.
