Top 3 performances of Inzamam-ul-Haq in Test Cricket

Inzamam-ul-Haq is one of the finest batters to have played for Pakistan. With Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Joe Root, and Steve Smith forming the Fab Four of today, Inzamam was forming a Fab Four alongside Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, and Ricky Ponting during his era. The right-handed batter was trolled by many for his burly physique, but he made them eat their words by playing some fantastic knocks across formats against the best bowling attacks in world cricket.

Inzamam-ul-Haq vs India (Bangalore, 2005)

This was Inzamam’s 100th Test match. Pakistan faced India at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in March 2005. Skipper Inzamam won the toss and opted to bat first. However, the tourists lost two wickets inside the first three overs. Inzamam needed to put his hand up and take his team out of the precarious situation, and he did so by stitching a record-shattering 324-run stand with Younis Khan.

Inzamam batted fluently against a strong Indian bowling attack and scored 184 off 264 balls. The right-handed batter belted 25 boundaries during his innings. He was eventually dismissed by Lakshmipathy Balaji. Inzamam finished with a strike rate of 69.69. Pakistan posted 570 in the first innings and took a lead of 121 runs after dismissing India for 449. In the second innings, the Pakistan captain scored an unbeaten 31 off 32 deliveries. The visiting side went on to win the match by 169 runs.

2. 138* vs Bangladesh (Multan, 2003)

This is one of the most dogged performances in Test cricket by a Pakistani batter. The Asian giants faced Bangladesh in the third Test in Multan in September 2003. The tourists scored 281 in the first innings. In reply, Pakistan could only muster 175, handing a lead of 106 runs to Bangladesh. In their second innings, the Bangla Tigers were dismissed for 154, setting the hosts a target of 261 in the fourth innings.

Pakistan kept losing wickets from one end, even as Inzamam continued to take the fight to the opposition. The experienced campaigner showed great resilience and batted remarkably well with the lower order. When Pakistan lost their eighth wicket, they still needed 58 runs. In the end, Inzamam remained unbeaten on 138 off 232 balls, hitting 20 fours and one six, as Pakistan won by one wicket.

1. 329 vs New Zealand (Lahore, 2002)

Inzamam ul Haq’s highest Test score came against New Zealand in the first Test in Lahore in May 2002. In the first innings, Inzamam walked out to bat at No. 4 and forged a 204-run partnership with Imran Nazir. After the latter fell for 127, the right-handed batter continued going from strength to strength. He scored boundaries for fun, punishing any bad ball delivered by the New Zealand bowling attack.

Inzamam eventually finished on 329 off 436 balls, hitting 38 fours and nine sixes. He had a strike rate of 75.45 when he was dismissed. Pakistan posted a whopping 643 in their first innings. In reply, New Zealand were blown away for 73. The home side enforced the follow-on, and this time, the Black Caps managed 246 as Pakistan won the match convincingly by an innings and 324 runs.
