Top 3 performances of Doug Bollinger in Tests

Top 3 performances of Doug Bollinger in Tests

Doug Bollinger was not a regular member of the Test side during his international career. This was mainly due to the severe competition amongst the Australian group back then. However, he was a constant threat in the 12 Tests played.

His over-the-wicket angle to batters and the release point at which Bollinger would release the ball would act as a constant menace to batters. Below are three bowling performances of the left-arm seamer listed in honour of his 44th birthday.

1) 5/28 in 13 overs vs New Zealand (2010)

Bollinger’s brilliant first five-over spell produced the wicket of BJ Watling (zero off one) in the very first over of New Zealand’s first innings. He struck on the very first ball of his new spell to dismiss Ross Taylor. Bollinger secured his third and fourth wickets in the same over.

Brendon McCullum (24 off 25) and Martin Guptill (30 off 122) departed within a span of three balls. Brent Arnel (zero off one) was Bollinger’s fifth wicket. New Zealand folded for 157 which meant they were enforced the follow-on by the hosts, who ended up emerging triumphant by 10 wickets.

2) 5/70 in 20 overs vs West Indies (2009)

Bollinger did not have the best of spells with the new ball, conceding 33 runs in seven overs. He snapped the big wicket of Chris Gayle (102 off 72) in the second over of his second spell. Bollinger dismissed Ramnaresh Sarwan (42 off 56) on the second ball of the third day.

Bollinger’s fourth and fifth wickets of Denesh Ramdin (8 off 12) and Gavin Tonge (2 off 4) wrapped up the visitors’ innings. Bollinger’s three more wickets in West Indies’ second innings was instrumental in Australia winning the game by 35 runs.

3) 4/72 in 21.5 overs vs Pakistan (2010)

Bollinger had bowled well but did not manage to pick up a wicket in his first 17 overs of Pakistan’s first innings. His next three overs finally reaped the fruits of his hard work. He had broken the middle-order with three wickets in three overs.

With the wicket of Danish Kaneria (4 off 9), Bollinger’s fourth ended Pakistan’s innings on 333. Despite a 200-plus lead with Pakistan, Australia ended up clinching victory by 36 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
