Top 3 performances of Dhammika Prasad in international cricket

Dhammika Prasad’s international career never followed a smooth path. Injuries interrupted him repeatedly, opportunities came in phases and consistency at the highest level was often difficult to build. Yet for a fast bowler in a country historically defined by spin, he produced enough memorable spells to leave a lasting impression on Sri Lankan cricket.

At his best, Prasad was quick, wholehearted and relentlessly competitive. He attacked the stumps, bowled with energy and never shied away from difficult conditions. While his overall record does not place him among Sri Lanka’s statistical giants, some of his performances came in matches that carried enormous significance. These were the three that defined his career.

5 for 50 vs England, Headingley, 2014

No performance captures Prasad’s value better than his spell at Headingley in June 2014. Sri Lanka entered the final day defending 350 and chasing a historic result. They had never won a Test series in England before and England still possessed enough batting to save the match.

Prasad became the difference. Bowling with pace and persistence, he dismissed Matt Prior, Stuart Broad and Liam Plunkett during a decisive spell that broke England’s resistance. His final figures of 5 for 50 in the second innings remain among the most important fast-bowling performances in Sri Lankan Test history.

The victory secured Sri Lanka’s first-ever Test series win in England and turned Prasad into the central figure of one of the country’s greatest overseas triumphs. Years later, Headingley remains the first match associated with his name.

7 wickets in the match vs Pakistan, Colombo (P Sara Oval), 2015

By 2015, Prasad had finally established himself as the leader of Sri Lanka’s pace attack. Against Pakistan in Colombo, he delivered a complete fast-bowling performance that showcased both discipline and aggression.

He claimed seven wickets in the match and was named Player of the Match as Sri Lanka levelled the series with a commanding victory. Pakistan’s batting line-up, featuring several experienced players comfortable against pace, struggled to handle his movement and relentless lengths.

More importantly, the spell came during the most productive phase of his career, when he was carrying Sri Lanka’s seam attack almost single-handedly. It was the kind of performance that demonstrated why team management continued to place faith in him despite years of injury setbacks.

Test debut vs India, Colombo (P Sara Oval), 2008

There are debuts and then there are debuts against a batting line-up featuring Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. Prasad’s first Test match came against one of India’s strongest batting generations and he responded without hesitation.

Bowling with hostility and surprising maturity, he dismissed Sehwag, Dravid and Tendulkar in the first innings before finishing with five wickets in the match. Sehwag had arrived in exceptional form after a double century earlier in the series, yet Prasad repeatedly troubled him with pace and bounce.

For a young fast bowler entering Test cricket, there could hardly have been a bigger statement. Although injuries prevented immediate momentum, that debut offered a glimpse of the bowler Sri Lanka believed could become a long-term force.
