Top 3 performances of Alec Stewart in international cricket

Alec Stewart was one of England’s most dependable and technically accomplished cricketers, known for his elegance against pace bowling and his ability to perform under pressure. Across 133 Tests and 170 ODIs, Stewart produced several memorable innings, but a few stand out for their impact and quality. Overall, in his career, he has scored 8463 Test runs and scored 4677 ODI runs with his bat.

Here are the top 3 performances of Alec Stewart in international cricket:

190 vs Pakistan, Birmingham, 1992

One of his greatest performances came against Pakistan at Edgbaston in 1992. In a high-scoring Test dominated by batters, Pakistan piled up 446/4 declared, with Javed Miandad scoring an unbeaten 153 and Saleem Malik contributing 165. In response, Stewart played a magnificent innings of 190 off 261 balls, striking 31 boundaries. His knock, alongside Robin Smith’s 127, helped England reach 459/7 declared and secure a draw. This innings remains Stewart’s highest Test score and showcased his ability to dominate quality bowling attacks with composure and strokeplay.

118 & 143 vs West Indies, Bridgetown, 1994

Another iconic performance came in 1994 against the West Indies at Bridgetown. Facing a formidable bowling attack featuring the likes of Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, Stewart delivered one of the finest displays of his career. He scored 118 in the first innings and followed it up with 143 in the second, becoming one of the few Englishmen to register centuries in both innings of a Test. England posted strong totals in both innings, supported by contributions from Mike Atherton, Graham Thorpe, and Graeme Hick. The bowlers, led by Angus Fraser, who took 8/75 in the first innings, ensured a famous 208-run victory. This match was historic as England defeated the West Indies at Bridgetown, a venue where they had been nearly unbeatable for decades.

116 vs India, Sharjah, 1997

Stewart’s brilliance was equally evident in limited-overs cricket. His century against India in Sharjah in 1997 remains one of his best ODI performances. In the opening match of the tournament, Stewart scored 116 off 111 balls, including nine fours and a six, anchoring England to a competitive total of 250. India, led by Sachin Tendulkar’s 91 and Ajay Jadeja’s 50, came close in the chase but were bowled out for 243. England’s bowlers, including Matthew Fleming and Dean Headley, held their nerve to seal the win.
