OTD: When Was Alec Stewart Born?

Alec Stewart was born on April 8, 1963, in Merton Park, England. He went on to become one of England’s most respected cricketers, serving as a right-handed wicketkeeper-batter and later captaining the national team. Over the course of his international career, Stewart earned recognition as one of England’s most dependable players. He remains among the most capped English cricketers, having played 133 Test matches and 170 ODIs.

He is widely regarded as one of England’s finest opening batters and was a key member of the squad that finished as runners-up in the 1992 Cricket World Cup. Cricketing excellence ran in his family, he is the younger son of Micky Stewart, a former England Test player. Alecmade his international debut during the 1989-90 tour of the West Indies, alongside Nasser Hussain, who would later succeed him as England captain.

Early in his career, Stewart played primarily as a specialist opening batter, while wicketkeeping duties were handled by Jack Russell, widely considered the superior gloveman at the time. One of Stewart’s most notable performances came in 1992, when he scored his highest Test score of 190 against Pakistan at Edgbaston.

This innings was part of an exceptional run in which he recorded four centuries in just five Tests. In 1994, at Kensington Oval, Stewart achieved another milestone by scoring centuries in both innings (118 and 143) against the West Indies, helping England secure a historic victory at Bridgetown, a venue where the hosts had been unbeaten since 1935.

Despite his achievements, Stewart’s overall Test batting average of 39.54 is the lowest among players who have scored over 8,000 runs in the format. However, this statistic reflects his dual role as a wicketkeeper-batter. When playing purely as a specialist batsman, he averaged an impressive 46.90 in 51 Tests. Notably, he also holds the record for the most Test runs (8,463) without ever scoring a double century.

Stewart’s leadership potential was recognised early, and he deputised for Graham Gooch during tours of India and Sri Lanka in 1993. However, when Gooch stepped down, Mike Atherton was appointed captain. Stewart eventually took over the role in 1998 following Atherton’s resignation. His tenure began on a high note, highlighted by a match-saving 164 against South Africa at Old Trafford, which helped England win the series 2-1. However, subsequent struggles against Australia and a disappointing 1999 World Cup campaign led to his replacement by Hussain.

Stewart continued playing for England until 2003 and achieved another milestone by scoring a century in his 100th Test, 105 against the West Indies in 2000. Across his first-class career, he amassed 26,165 runs in 447 matches, including 48 centuries and 148 fifties, cementing his legacy as one of England’s most accomplished cricketers.
