Top 3 performances of Alec Bedser

Top 3 performances of Alec Bedser

Late Alec Bedser was one of England’s finest bowlers during the post-war era. Known for his variations like the inswinger and leg-cutter, Bedser played a huge role in England’s bowling attack in the 1940s and 1950s. Despite starting his first-class career relatively late due to World War II, he quickly made up for lost time. His finest moments came in the 1953 Ashes series, where he dominated one of the best Australian batting lineups.

1. 14 Wickets for 99 Runs vs Australia – Trent Bridge, 1953

One of Alec Bedser’s most memorable performances came in the 1953 Ashes Test at Trent Bridge. He took 14 wickets in the match, with figures of 7/44 in the first innings and 7/55 in the second. This remains one of the best match figures by an English bowler in Ashes history to this day.

2. 7/44 in the First Innings vs Australia – Trent Bridge, 1953

Bedser’s 7/44 in the first innings of the same match at Trent Bridge deserves separate mention for how he set up the game. Australia, batting first, were bowled out early, courtesy of Bedser’s excellent spell. Wickets came regularly as he dismantled the top and middle order singlehandedly. This performance gave England an early advantage in the match and showed why Bedser was considered one of the most reliable and effective bowlers of his time.

3. 39 Wickets in the 1953 Ashes Series

Across the entire 1953 Ashes series, Bedser took 39 wickets at an average of just 17.48. He was the leading wicket-taker in the series and consistently bowled long. His performances across the five Tests helped England win the Ashes for the first time since 1934.
