The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a batting paradise for many years and the IPL Fever is on with the start of the 2025 season. We already saw a huge number of sixes in the first three matches and the biggest match was on the second day, where SRH faced RR in Hyderabad.
‘The Attack’ strategy again worked well for the Sun Riders Hyderabad team as they set a massive total of 286 after the first innings. Rajasthan Bowler Jofra Archer was thrashed to all parts of the ground and now holds one unwanted record of the costliest spell in IPL history. Let us look at the Top 3 most expensive spells in the history of IPL since its inauguration in 2008.
1. Jofra Archer (RR) 76 Runs vs SRH 2025

The Rajasthan Royals bowlers faced the scariest team of the IPL SRH in their opening game of the 2025 season. As usual, the Sun Risers Hyderabad took the attacking strategy in hand, which worked well for them. Their two scary openers, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma initiated the attack followed by Ishan Kishan who played his debut match for the team.
He scored a century on his debut and became a nightmare for Jofra Archer. His very first over was a 20-run spell where he was thrashed to all parts by Travis’s head. After that Ishan Kishan started smashing him to the ground. The English fast bowler in his four overs gave 76 runs without taking wickets. His runs per over average is 19.0 which is the highest for this season and overall in the IPL.
2. Mohit Sharma (GT) 73 Runs vs DC 2025

The Former IPL purple cap winner gave a wonderful return to the IPL in the 2023 season. But the 2024 IPL was a disaster for him as his Slow medium-pace bowling and Knuckel balls didn’t work against Delhi Capitals. Axar Patel and Rishab Pant were the main culprits and they thrashed Mohit Sharma without giving him any chance to breathe.
Finally, Mohit Sharma became the most expensive bowler in the history of IPL by giving 73 runs in his 4-over spell without any wickets. His Average runs per over is 18.3 which is highly frustrating for a bowler who won a purple cap.
3. Basil Thampi (SRH) 70 Runs vs RCB 2018

The 2016 IPL finalists SRH and RCB played at the Chinnaswamy ground in Bengaluru in the 2018 season. In this match, SRH fast bowler Basil Thampi was smashed to all parts of the ground by the batting-heavy RCB side.
AB de Villiers, Moeen Ali, Colin De Granddhomme and Sarfraz Khan targeted the young fast bowler in his four-over spell and scored a mammoth 218-run target in 20 overs. Basil gave 70 runs at an average of 17.50 which was the most expensive spell till the 2024 IPL season.
