Top 3 knocks of Sourav Ganguly in ODI cricket

Top 3 knocks of Sourav Ganguly in ODI cricket

Few batters in Indian cricket history have influenced ODI cricket like Sourav Ganguly. Known for his elegant cover drives, fearless stroke play, and ability to rise to the occasion, the former India captain played several memorable innings during his illustrious career. Whether it was dominating the world’s best bowlers or delivering on the biggest stage, Ganguly consistently produced match-winning performances.

Here are three of his most iconic ODI knocks:

3. 111 vs Kenya, ICC World Cup 2003 semifinal

With a place in the World Cup final at stake, Ganguly produced a captain’s knock against Kenya in the semifinal at Durban on March 20, 2003.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, India got off to a steady start. Ganguly then took charge of the innings and remained unbeaten on 111 off 114 balls, striking five fours and five sixes. He shared an important partnership with Sachin Tendulkar, who chipped in with 83, as India posted 270/4 in their 50 overs.

Kenya failed to chase the target and were bowled out for 179, handing India a comfortable 91-run victory and a place in the World Cup final. Ganguly’s unbeaten century under pressure remains one of the finest innings of his captaincy career.

2. 141 vs Pakistan, Adelaide Oval, 2000

Few innings are more satisfying than scoring a century against Pakistan, and Ganguly did exactly that during a tri-nation tournament in Adelaide, Australia, in Adelaide on January 25, 2000.

Facing a quality pace attack led by Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar, the left-hander played with remarkable composure and authority. He scored 141 off 144 balls, combining caution with aggression whenever the opportunity presented itself.

Ganguly’s innings featured several trademark cover drives and confident pull shots as he anchored India’s batting effort. His knock helped India post 267/5, a total that eventually proved enough as the Men in Blue secured a memorable victory by 48 runs.

Against one of the strongest bowling attacks of that era, Ganguly once again proved why he was regarded as one of the best ODI openers in world cricket.

1. 183 vs Sri Lanka, ICC World Cup 1999

Ganguly’s greatest ODI innings came during the 1999 World Cup against Sri Lanka at Taunton. It remains one of the most destructive knocks ever played by an Indian batter in ODI cricket.

After India lost Sachin Tendulkar early, Ganguly joined Rahul Dravid at the crease, and the duo completely dominated the Sri Lankan bowlers. Ganguly smashed 183 off just 158 deliveries, lacing his innings with 17 fours and seven sixes.

The left-hander and Dravid stitched together a historic 318-run partnership for the second wicket, with Dravid contributing 145. Their brilliant stand powered India to a massive 373/6 in 50 overs.

Sri Lanka never looked in the chase and were bundled out well short of the target as India registered a commanding 157-run victory.

Ganguly’s 183 remains the highest individual score by an Indian in ODI World Cup history and also stands as the highest score of his ODI career. The innings perfectly showcased his ability to combine elegance with aggression and is widely regarded as the finest ODI knock of his legendary career.
