Top 3 bowling performances of Trevor Goddard in Tests

Top 3 bowling performances of Trevor Goddard in Tests

Trevor Goddard was a South African all-rounder who played in the 1950s. In total, he played 41 Test matches from 1955 to 1970 and was known for a series draw in Australia in 1963-64 after he had become captain virtually by default. Apart from this, he was an incredible bowler and had several 5-wicket hauls in the longest format of the game. He was an astonishing batter as well. He scored 2516 runs in 78 innings at an average of 34.46. In first-class cricket, he has played 298 innings and scored 11289 runs at an average of 40.60.

Let’s discuss the top three bowling performances of Trevor Goddard in Tests:

1. 6 wickets vs Australia, 1966

Against Australia in the year 1966, Goddard claimed a six-wicket haul in the second innings of the game and helped South Africa win the game by 233 runs. His incredible spell in the 2nd innings proved quite harmful to the Australian batting line-up, as they couldn’t play him at all. That was one of the reasons they failed to draw the match and ended up losing all the wickets.

2. 5 wickets vs England, 1955

In the starting years of his career, Goddard seemed to have good growth with the kind of bowling he did. In 1955, he claimed a 5-wicket haul against England, which wasn’t much help as the Proteas lost the match by 92 runs. However, his bowling efforts were much appreciated by the critics and the supporters. It was a low-scoring match, which proves that the bowlers had a slight edge over the batters.

3. 5 wickets vs Australia, 1964

Trevor Goddard’s best spells came against Australia as he claimed another 5-wicket haul against the Aussies in 1964. Along with some great bowling, South Africa’s batting was amazing which helped them win the Test match by 10 wickets. Goddard’s bowling efforts were quite appreciated which restricted Australia from scoring more runs.
